Is it worth it?

For FCP?? Not really. You'll want a dualie and 2 gigs of ram. Which iMac G5 is this? First generation? If it's the 2nd gen it might be a good buy... but again, I'd stay away from it for FCP use. You'll also need some external FW drives which will be a pain chaining them AND using a deck/camera AND iSight etc.

Sorry... maybe not what you wanted to hear.

Yeah, for FCP 5. Basic SD editing for now. I would upgrade the Ram to 2GB. Right now, it's the most I can afford. It is really just to start learning on.

There is a camp of folks who think Apple's refurb Macs are complete garbage and always break - and they have evidence to prove it. There is another camp that says the opposite, and also has evidence.
I would budget in a really good backup system to be safe.

I would say that would be true for HD editing, but for SD that seems fine with a 1 gig of ram. Nothing special but it will do the trick at a decent speed.

Granted.

And yes, refurb macs are picky at best... however... Apple is VERY good about fixing ANYTHING that breaks on their refurbs.

Get yourself an external FW drive and have fun.

oh -- and the second gen G5's have the FrontRow capability that would be cool if it had. Nothing to do with editing... only eye candy... but cool stuff.
