Is it best to take camera off tripod?

I have a Manfrotto 516 head with 75mm ball. My Sony PMW-EX1 plus all its accessories will probably weighed about 15 pounds. When I'm not using the camera for about 8 to 24 hours, is it best to take the camera off the tripod? Or, does matter if the camera is on or off the tripod for long periods of time?

I personally take my camera off the tripod, simply because accidents happen. If its too much of a hassle to take it off and put it back on and you have a safe enough area designated for it, I suppose you can leave it on. In my opinion its safest to take it off and put it back on when required.

You should not leave weight on a tripod head for an extended period of time, you take the chance of creating a soft spot in the tilt and or pan that could show up in your movements.

Thanks for the response. I was afraid of things like Gopher mentioned. I always try to take my camera off the tripod when I'm not using it, but I was wondering if by leaving the camera (around 15 pounds total weight) on the tripod will ruin the tripod somehow. I am not aware of the consequences yet, like to know what those are. Gopher just mentioned one very important.

As well as risk to the head - your camera is sitting a fair way above the ground - all that needs to happen is for it to get knocked and you'll have an expensive repair bill ahead of you
