Is it a common practice to use 100b mic and shotgun mic on both channels?

the dvx100b has 2 channels and you can use one channel for the shotgun mic I have and then use the onboard mic for the 2nd channel. Is that good to do or better to have both channels dedicated to the shotgun mic?

There are two schools of thought on that. One says to route both channels to the shotgun and to set the volume levels at slightly different settings, to protect against clipping. The other school of thought is to leave one channel set to the onboard mic, to get ambient audio and maybe bail you out of trouble if something happened to the shotgun during the take.

thanks a lot barry. I ended up using both channels to the shotgun, prob i found was humming which i was hoping was my headset during shooting.. nope :( Hopefully some audio editing can fix it.

These types of tidbits are exactly why I love reading dvxuser.com

On a side note Barry, did you happen to be at the Red Rock Casino shooting the cast interviews of "21" with Kevin Spacey, Laurence Fishburne and Kate Bosworth? I was there on Friday and it looked like a lot of fun.
