is HDMI better than component for upconverting via hardware???

I have FCP7, Matrox MXO2 and I'm renting a Sony HVR-M25AU HDV VTR tape deck for the weekend. Is it better to use HDMI than component going from the tape deck to the MXO2 for SD to HD (upconverting 480i NTSC DV tapes to 720p in MXO2) upconversion process???

Thanks very much in advance,

- Nick

Depends on what HDMI is being used- some cameras use the older spec with less color, or only pump out a sub-HD signal. Check your specs.

HDMI is a digital signal as opposed to an analogue signal. Any HDMI should be better than analogue component.

Not necessarily- some cameras/decks output a lower than HD resolution to HDMI. It pays to check into the specific gear's manual.

I was stating in theory HDMI is better. That does not mean the manufacturer can not make the HDMI signal out put at half resolution but HDMI can go beyond 1920 X1080.

I think it would have been better if you stated in theory HDMI is better but the manufactuerer can limit the resolution if they want to. S-Video is better than composite but a manufactuerer could limit the S-Video quality if they wanted. Why they would do it is beyond me. I can not imagine the Sony HVR-M25AU HDV VTR tape deck having limited HDMI resolution but I guess anyhing is possible.
