Is final AVI deinterlaced?

If I shoot with DVX 24pa and edit on a 24 fps timeline with pull down removed, then render it to an avi with pull down re-inserted, is the final avi de-interlaced?
Anyone?

Thanks,

Joseph Kell

If you do it as described, it will be a 60i file, so it will be interlaced.

Two things: 1) You can remove it later in Vegas or another NLE if you want, and 2) it will still have the 24p aesthetic.

You can render an "uncompressed" AVI and make the settings pretty much anything you want, including true 24p (no pulldown, just progressive frames).

What do you have in mind to do?

Hey David,

I want to take the fianl AVI into Quicktime and export it as de-interlaced to view on the internet,

JK

You should be fine if you want to do it that way.

But you have lots of options within Vegas to do the same thing -- no need to go into QT to do it.

What did you want to render as, specifically?

David, under compressed, would you want to render your 24P/PA footage to TRUE 24P (as mentioned above) or instead to IVTC 23.976? I've always rendered out to the IVTC 23.976, as I thought it was basically the same as 24P ... something Barry Green had mentioned/discussed once.

That's 24p. But you can use the 24.000 (film) option if you want -- I just did a series of tests to see if it makes a difference, and it doesn't.

Barry may have been referring to renders for further editing? Or for DVD? Not sure.

He had some real scientific, professor-like explaination about how it actually wouldn't look/play right on the web if done with Film 24P, and that the IVTC 23.976 is actually true progressive 24 FPS ... it's all over my head. I just do what I'm told, but I see what you mean ... you'd think it'd work either way.

Just looked at that paragragh ... hopefully it doesn't come across as derogatory ... I totally value his help & input when ever it's offered.

Maybe. I haven't done that much with putting stuff on the web. Usually I just cut and let someone else worry about getting it posted.

Okay, let's go back to the beginning: you DON'T want "de-interlaced." De-interlacing is an evil resolution-destroying thing that was only ever contemplated when you were using the more-evil interlaced mode.

Shooting for the web on a DVX, you should be using 24P or 30P, and you should *never* de-interlace progressive footage... you'll just be throwing away resolution if you do.

If you shot 30p, edited in a 30p timeline, and output a 30fps file, there won't be any sort of interlacing going on. Similarly, if you shot 24p, edited on a 24p timeline, and output a 24p file, there won't be any interlacing at all.

Regarding 24fps vs. 23.976, the DVX runs at 23.976. If you have the choice, choose 23.976. Won't make a whole lot of difference one way or the other, but 23.976 is a little more accurate (0.1% more accurate, to be exact).

I was assuming by "deinterlaced," he meant progressive.
Probably, but I just like to spell it out so that people don't get confused. Prior to the DVX all the buzz was "de-interlace this" and "de-interlace that"; people need to be aware that de-interlacing progressive footage just ruins it, it doesn't help it at all.

Could someone clear this up for me: If I deinterlace 60i footage, is it then 30p footage? Also, native 24p footage cannot be deinterlaced, can it?

EDIT: Barry, I just saw your post above. So if I do deinterlace 24p footage, what exactly am I doing to it? Thanks, Ken

If you de-interlace 60i footage, it becomes a low-res simulation of 30p footage. Whereas 30p can have a full resolution of 480 horizontal lines, de-interlaced 60i would max out at somewhere around 180. But the motion signature would be the same. So it'd look like low-res 30p.

De-interlacing 24p would cut your resolution in half; it'd copy the even lines onto the odd lines, throwing away half your res.

I rendered my .wmv as 60i, I think. Because everytime I encoded at 24p with WM9 out of Premiere, it played back real "funny" in Windows Media Player.

What if you had deinterlaced selected in properties field while you were capturing and editing, but later you put dinterlaced to none in properties field. Does that have any effect on footage. I am trying to find out why my footage looks so crappy now.
