Is DVD burning Legal?

Hey all,

I just updated my computer to prepare for my Sony Vegas installation.

Upped the RAM, added a DVD R/RW drive, ect....

I also installed Nero to back-up my DVD collection (400+) .

Unfortunately, I can't use it because the DVD's are "protected".

After doing a little research, I found that by downloading a few programs free from the internet, called DVD DECRYPTER and DVD SHRINK, I could back up my DVD's.

I was just wondering if anyone else does this, and is it legal? Will I get in trouble for taking this route?

What you are talking about is one of the gray areas of current copyright law. The two landmark cases concerning video technology (Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc. and MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd.) have left the issue in kind of a state of limbo. From the MGM decision, the court found that P2P companies could be sued for acts taken in the course of marketing file sharing software. Since this decision, alot of digital innovation has been stiffled, IMO.

For your question, "Can I back up my own legally purchased DVDs. I do not think that there is any precident for or against. I think that the argument for "Fair use" would be up held. If you do not distribute bootleg copies, I think that Fair Use would apply.

You can "back-up" anything you legally bought. They just don't want you distributing or selling the copies.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I'm deathly afraid to do anything even remotely shady on my computer in fear of the feds knocking at my door. :undecided

Then again, I've got friends who have been doing the P2P thing for a while, and others burning DVD's from Blockbuster using their 3-at-a-time movie pass. So far, they are safe...

I don't know. This crap is confusing!

If you bought it and don't distribute copies, I think you're safe. They're just going after the pirates. Burn away.

Your are legally allowed to create a back up of any DVD you purchase... as someone already stated.

An easier way to backup is to use either nero or Clone DVD whilst running a programme called any DVD. If your burner is dual layer you shouldnt have to worry about compression etc .. assuming you insert a dual layer dvd-r

Hey I got Toy Story Part III on DVD. Anyone want a copy? 50 bucks a pop! Hey, I got wife n kids to feed! ;)

PK sums it best man!

Man dvd's are awesome, I think I might copy one one day, just so I can have it as a backup. Hey 100 posts! Now I can vote on the zombie movies!

DVD Decrypter & Shrink are awesome!! But don't worry...these programs don't have any *FBI phone home* tracking mechanisms built into them.....so your safe.

Be careful Super Trooper, I would hate for you to go down before you get to pull off the great HD rental package heist!

Go to afterdawn.com and download DVD Shrink. It's fast, easy, and all you need for backups. The quality is great too.

Well not really. Again and again such cases say it is illegal:

At one time, women couldn't vote - the law was an ass.

I am not advocating piracy, but there is a limit on what I'll put up with as a citizen. Burning backup copies of my legally bought media is one instance where I say '**** the law'.

It's a safe practice to backup your media. If you are a business, you are legally obliged to keep a backup of your computer files, customer information, etc., to qualify for insurance. You're telling me that I shouldn't protect my assets (i.e., legally bought media) in case of a disaster?

Long live civil disobedience!

The record industry gets a few cents for every CD sold to cover such a thing.
Right - so, the next time my niece's kids scratch my CDs (never should have left them sleeping in my family room), I should just call EMI, and say: excuse me, a disaster hit my household, can you please replace these for me?

I see it when I believe it.

CRAP!
I meant to say I believe it when I see it! The kitchen in the chicken caught up with me again... damn immigrants!
