is ambient dust a threat to camcorders?

A friend of mine says that camcorders should always be kept in dust covers or cases when not being used, because if just left e.g on a table or equipment rack the room dust can get inside the camcorder and inside the space between the lens and the UV filter cover. Is there truth to this, or is this myth?

The space between the lens and filter is possible sometimes, but in most circumstances I can't see it happening. Most cameras I've seen are sealed up enough that it wouldn't be a problem unless you happen to be in the desert or on the moon.

Also, its just good practice to keep it in a clean space thats well protected from bumps and drops, such as a case.

not that I think that its very big risk having it on your table. But always keep it in the case.

agree. you can always cover it up too.. That is if you dont have a case. I have my camera on tripod with m2 connected. I have not put it away in its case since i practice with it. I leave it on my tripod covered up with a soft cloth to prevent dust build up etc. just my added .2...

Okay thanks all for the input. I decided to buy a Hardigg Storm Case 2720 for my XHA1s and hopefully it will have enough room also for my little burrito camcorder (Canon VIXIA HF100).
