Is Agassi Going to Beat Federer?

Do you remember when this 16 year-old beotch showed up? The hair, the Vegas flash, the attitude, the prima donna . . . walked away from a match because he got a bee sting . . . refused to play Wimbledon. Hated the guy then.

But then he figured out he had to work for it, and nothing but honey flowed after that.

The guy is making me want to get my 34 year-old ass to a court, pronto. I just bought a new 85" racquet I'm itching to use. Got rid of the 105".

Too bad that Federer won, but, what a match and what a week for Andre! The five setter against Blake was the one of the best I've seen in a long time. Almost as good as the Conners Krikstein classic!

For years I kept breaking racquets and then I got a couple of Wilson Pro-Staffs in the early eighties and have used them ever since.

Sigh...

Andre lost; I knew it too good to be true. Inspiring as hell though. 35?

I agree. I'm been thinking of picking up the racket again (been more than a few years). Sides; I wanna teach my son Tennis; and Golf; and Sailing......

Heh heh

My racket is a

Wilson Hammer 6.2 110 INCHES BABY. (The same raquet I played with in the Late 90's; last time I played any serious tennis). You know what? Screw it. I'm gonna get back out there.

I really like the Pro-Staff -- the original '80s version.

Sampras won seven Wimbledons with it, so it must have something going for it.

Wilson T2000, baby. About 3 square inches of raquet used magically by Connors in the '80s when tennis was a finesse game rather than a power match. I remember wanting one of those things so bad when I was a kid.

Went through 4 of those! They had a nasty habit of breaking where the metal piece that was the bottom of the racquet head was welded to the outer frame. Tennis did have power hitters back then. Roscoe Tanner's serve was consistently around 135mph. Also don't forget about the big serve and volley game of the "Newc" himself!

I'll never forget the Rod Laver piece of dung racket I got for Christmas when I was 11. Man, that thing could really send dirt clods a flyin'. It made an awesome guitar I would strum like mad while jumping off my bed and rocking out to Nazareth... or some such...

this was a very difficult match to watch, as if you were paying attention, you'd know that federer threw the second set. Besides being number one in the world overall, it is well known that Federer has the best backhand in the game, probably ever. So for him to be floating up slices on 80 mph second serve returns, was a tell-tale sign that he was throwing that set so as not to embarrass Agassi in front of his home crowd. Federer, althought modest, cares very much about how he's perceived, and wants to be loved, especially in America. Administering a straight-set beat down on their hero would have earned him some enemies.

I hate to say it, cause i love Agassi, and i still think that if Agassi had dedicated himself 100% for his entire career he would've won more majors than Sampras, but Federer is far and away the best player in history. He is so good it's scary. Even when he has a bad day he still crushes people. The only knock on him is that his girlfriend's ugly. Dude, you're the best player in history and that's the best you can do?? I'm sure she's really really nice, and that somewhere deep inside her there's a dream... but take a look at Safin's girlfriend, or Blake's for that matter. You can do a whole lot better!

LOL!

I wish you could some how arrange a match in all sports between the true greats of all time. Federer vs Sampras at his peak for example. I'm not sure if the old school greats would have the strength to match a modern player like Federer. Would be great to watch... hmm... what other clashes of the Titans could we see... Ali vs Tyson?

It would be pretty unprofessional for Federer to to have purposely thrown a set. No way. If it were discovered to be true, he should be drummed out of the sport.

Besides, Americans like winners, and they like gracious losers. If Federer had crushed, the American audience would respect it, and if Andre just said "wow, this guy's GOOD!" -- as he would have had he been skunked -- it would have just sealed the deal. Everyone knows Agassi is past his prime and the Federer currently dominates; no one expected Agassi to win.

Now, Federer has the *potential* to be the greatest player ever, but he hasn't done it yet.

I don't. Hewitt was having a pretty good run at Federer's backhand as well. At one point they printed a statistic saying that Federer had one backhand winner vs. 12 backhand unforced errors.

As far as "the greatest player ever", I can't count the number of greatest players ever that I've seen, who just totally faded after a short time. Martina Hingis set the world on fire for a while. The Williams sisters were absolutely unbeatable, in a class several rungs above the rest. So far, there are only two who stand the test of time as the greatest players ever:

Pete Sampras, and Steffi Graf.

If Federer wins 15 Grand Slam titles (or 22, like Steffi did, including the Golden Grand Slam) then we'll re-examine it. As it is right now it's way early in Federer's career.

I agree that today's media has annoited far too many 'best evers' before they've even done anything, and I hate it (how many 'the next michael jordans have we seen?). But Federer is the real deal. He fixed his only weakness, questionable concentration, three years ago, and even Sampras admits that he'll probably win more majors than him. The only thing that can stop him is injury. But Federer's game is so smooth, so easy on the body, that even that is unlikely.

Remember that Agassi, 15 years ago, threw the fourth set to Conners 0-6 to prove he could win a five-set match (he had never done so before - people questioned his conditioning) So this might have been poetic justic.

Federer is scary good, I'll say that. I'm just saying that he has to stay that good for a decade before he can have a serious claim on Sampras' crown...

Federer could easily burn out, blow out a knee, or, God forbid, get stabbed by a rabid fan. The kid's got the gift, but he hasn't converted it yet, and he's a got a long, long way to go before he does.

Agassi was a class-A TOOL for the first few years of playing. Federer isn't like that at all. He takes his sport seriously.
