Is AG-MC100G good for an on camera mic?

Hi, for documentary work wherein you find yourself without
a boom operator, is the Panasonic AG-MC100G a good enough
mic to attach to the AG-DVC30?

If not, what's the best mic to use for all around recording to expand
the range of what the built-in mic can do, yet does not require another person
to operate it?

This is run-and-gun style documentary work I'm talking about.

The AG-MC100G seems to have a wind cover and an XLR connector
that can attach to the AG-DVC30 with an adaptor. Do I need a shock mount,
as well?

Thanks.

P.s. It says I last logged in 12-31-1969, well before I was born.

Check out the Azden SGM-1X, Azden SGM-2X or the Azden SGM-1000.

Don't bother with the AG-MC100G, it not worth the money.

Thanks guys. So are suggesting I use a shotgun mic instead of an omni-directional? I want to get better sound of all the sound, not just the dialogue.

Tarlonyx, do you think the shock mount that comes free with the at897, the shm-1, is sufficient?

For both of you guys, do you think any of these mics will be too long to camera mount on the small ag-dvc30?

Thanks again for your help.

If you're concerned about the length, they all slide in the shock mounts.
You might want to look at the Sennheiser MKE300 Shotgun Mic as well, a nice mic.

Forgive me if I sound ignorant, but wouldn't I want a unidirectional mic for run and gun documentary work if I wanted to get good sound all around, not just the dialogue of a person i'm pointing the camera at, if I don't have a sound man to hold a boom or record ambient sound?

Everyone recommended shotgun mics. If you don't like the AG-MC100G, what is a good alternative unidirectional mic and why?

Thanks!

OK, so go for a shotgun mic for all around run and gun shooting, even if I don't have a sound guy and I want better audio on everything, not just dialogue?

On my videos I get good audio with the shotgun mic, even slightly off axis. For my car shows I'll use the CS1 on one channel and a G2 wireless setup and handheld for my spokesperson.

The CS1 is pretty expensive and you need phantom power. The AT897 isn't awful in price, and I use it with a shure XLR -> 1/8" unit to go into my GL2. I can't remember if I'm using the mount that came with the mic or not, but its a tall one with the rubber mount.

I just bought a fisheye too, so I'm not sure if i'll be able to leave it on camera (GL2).

Hope this helps.
