Is Adobe ever going to fix Premiere for HDV?

Is Adobe ever going to put out a fix for the massive audio sync problem it has with HDV video from my Canon XH A1? I've tried capturing with Premiere, no luck. I've tried capturing with CineForm, import into Premiere, no luck. Tried capturing with HDVSplit, import into Premiere, no luck.

I've had to resort to buying vegas and using that stupid ass program. I hate the way its layed out and how to edit video in it. But it works with the m2t files just fine.

Are there any workarounds for Premiere or am i stuck using vegas? Mind you i plopped down the money to get CS3 not too long ago. Now i've got a program that's useless.

Thanks!
mike

Nope, didn't work. First part of my file is synced just fine, but go say, 50min in, it's about 1 sec. off. HDVsplit didn't report that there were any dropped frames either. I just tried the same m2t file in Premiere 2.0 (with a few different project settings), no luck there either.

I can't wait till this whole tape thing is completely gone! I can't stand the fact that i have to put my video to a pos tape format. 1) i hate the fact that i'm stuck using 63min tapes, all the 83's i've tried have dropped major frames, i wouldn't worry so much but all my shots are done live, no chance for "Redo!" and 2) i don't want to spend an extra $1200-1400 for a FireStore, just another thing i'd have to carry and batteries to worry about and the firewire on the XH A1 is crap. I need my rig as light as possible, The XH A1 is heavy enough on it's own. I'd sell it in a heartbeat if i could get a camera (in the same price range) that had solid state storage. And the Panasonic P2 is too damn much per gig.

Ok, Trying with HDVSplit and Scene Split mode, we'll see how that does. I'll post on findings.

Edit: Ok, just tried with Scene Split mode in HDVSplit. It split the all the scenes correctly but still a bad audio sync problem with Premiere CS3. My two largest files are only about 30min each. Both out of sync.

And before i posted this i wanted to make a note of length of audio problem... ya, i just found bad frames (pixelated) on the file.

I don't know how to overcome this damn problem when i still have to use this 1996 tape technology.

Come on sold state Cameras!!!! I hated cassette audio tapes, i hated DAT tapes, i hated VHS, and now most of all MiniDV.

I don't know why it's so hard for these companies to put out a camera with some type of solid state recording device (internal or external) and also have the 3CCD's and pro features and not be a small little toy camera. Also not make it priced outrageously like Panasonic does. I know Sony has the HVR-Z7U Compact Flash comming out, but MSRP of $6850 that's just out of my range. Personally the $3500 i dropped for this Canon XH A1 was too much for what i got... it's on it's way to be a heavy paper weight in my book.

Until its solved, do your captures with OnLocation since it will split your files when the tape has timocode brakes or dropped frames. OnLocation was included in the package when you bought Premiere Pro CS3. OnLoacation is a superiour capture tool.

Most important, send your camera to Canon and let them fix the problem because it needs to be done.

Well, you knew it was a tape camera when you bought it, so what exactly did you expect? The A1 is probably the last of the great tape cameras, and it is very good at what it does: gorgeous image quality and pro feature in a compact form.

I just tried capturing w/ OnLocation. It seemed to work. I'm not trying very hard anymore on this project as it is already done (did the editing in vegas a week ago) but as i stated earlier i don't like vegas and would like to get back to premiere.

The captures with OL are synced correctly when i import them into premiere.

I just wanted to get this problem ironed out for my next shoot.

I use to have a Canon GL2 and that thing sucked. Brand new and the infamous "Remove Cassette Error" a month in.

So, i upgraded to the XH A1 (Big price jump for me). It's done a pretty good job for what i use it for. I just think that all these companies have been dragging there feet on moving these "Pro" cameras to another medium, and not this consumer miniDV medium. I don't see why i would have to spend another $3000+ on top of what i've already dropped just to get to some sort of solid state level. Just bad management, project planning on their part. They have to be the ones to say, "nope, we don't make anymore tape cameras." Because that's the only way we will progress. Not enough people are standing up and saying this fact, they just buy and live with it. My voice is not enough to make them change. Look at the US tv broadcasts, come February no more NTSC! If they wouldn't have made this move we would still be pumping out this damn 4:3 crap for many years in the future.

Ok, i'm tired of typing and ranting.

Thanks for the help.
mike.

I don't think the problem is the tape.
I am editing (professionally for a decade and a half) from tape including MiniDV lately.
Never a sync problem but in Premiere.
You may have problems with a domestic Cannon camcorder - I wouldn't know for I ever used Sony.
However the problem is the same in Premiere even if one uses the FX1 (Sony).
The same tapes sync perfectly in Final Cut. (Transfered to FCP from the very same FX1 camcorder)
This indicates to me that the problem is with Adobe's incompetence to write working code rather than the tape system.

Their last 'fix' (June, 2008) of HDV editing is simply unworkable. Footage captured via Premier is badly out of sync. (And the audio drops out for a second after about 5 seconds. Then it comes back ... and drops out and ...)
Apperently if one captures with on location the footage is in sync. (This is another clue that the Premier team is incompetent for the OnLocation team can do it. One is wondering how come ...?) While capturing with onlocation may be a workaround for new projects, it does not help me. I already have over twenty hours on the drives. I don't want to re-capture.

In my opinion Premier is an immatured software and people pay for the priviledge of beta testing.
