So Ive been looking into getting a 100a for a long time and recently have found one for a pretty good price but it has 200 hours on it. It that a lot for the camera?

As far as I understand (and from what I've read) the DVX is good for 3000 hours... is this correct folks?

200 in one month?? I am at 120 hours after 7 months. I would talk to the person and ask them what tapes were in the camera, what conditions he shot under. What kind of climate he was in, etc. Just try to find out if the camera was babied or belonged to some company and was used by everyone. I would be too scared to buy a used one. Only because my last camera had head problems out the wazoo.

is that hours on the heads? I mean does the timer go when the camera is on, or only when its recording?

The timer goes if the drum is activiated - which to my knowledge means you have tape in the camera and the camera is "on" (don't quote me on this).

But you certainly don't have to be recording. I recently recorded one tape's worth of footage on a new DVX, transfered it to my NLE (so tape was actually moving in the transport for two hours - I didn't do any caputre preview), and the internal counter recorded nine hour's use.

The camera spent a good deal of time switched on because I was giving the user settings a good work over with the DVX hooked up to a CRT, and only occasionally going into record mode. All the while the counter was happily ticking over.

By the way, all things being equal, I don't think 200 hours is lot. Have a look at the overall condition of the machine and check out what the orignial owner has been using it for.

200 hours is nothing to worry about. heads might need cleaned, tho.
lacuna- try setting the menu to power down the heads after five minutes non-rec. :)
