Iriver, off board mic options? Good?

Here's the need: Just picked up a DVX100A and getting business up and running.

Current client needs a video shot, and then narration added, so there will be no synching, etc. However, looking forward, we will be doing weddings, other corp events, etc.

Reading other forums, looks like some folks use an MP3 recorder and a cheap AudioTechnica Lapel mic and then bring the sound in, sync it, and are very happy with the results.

I did read the "New to Audio", but it seems like for $300, you get junk. Also, every mic except 1 or 2 was the Oktava MK012. Is it really that good? Can it be mounted off camera for interviewiing/narrating?

Shotgun mics appear to be a poor solution, am I wrong?

Thanks in advance for your input.

I am not following your question(s). Could you be more specific in what you are interested in/trying to do? If you want to know about the Iriver as a hiding recorder used instead of a wireless I will tell you the model that was very popular for that purpose is no longer made.

Cheers

I guess in a nutshell, what the question is:

We have to have a DVX100A, (newbie), and our first project requires a voiceover. We expect to then be doing a lot of normal events, including weddings, etc, but still have some interviews/voiceovers to do.

It appears that the audio primer suggests the Oktava microphone, but the "cheap" setup is around $300.

We don't want to buy "cheap", is this oktava really the best option? For your first mic, would you do this or go shotgun on camera with shock kit?
