ipod with video question...

Not sure where to put this...the technology section seems like it should be dedicated to cameras...

I just got the 30 gig iPOD with video...but I cant seem to figure out how to upload a video. I brought it into ITUNES, i converted it to make it compatible for the iPOD, and now its on my unit, but when I go to video and try to play the darn thing, all it does is play the music (its a montage cut to one song), and displays a little icon of the first shot of my video, as if it was album art. What gives?

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?...

Gee, I'm surprised I couldnt figure it out from the massive 3 page ditto-slash-instruction booklet APPLE sent a long with the iPOD...

What did you create the video in? It seems you may have uploaded it in podcast format.

www.isquint.com has a video converter for the iPod (as a last resort when iTunes isn't agreeing with you)

try it with isquint see how it goes.

Thanks Zach for responding.

I got it to work. In Video/Movie settings, I had TV OUT turned on. I turned it off and it worked fine. What I found odd though, was when I went to iPod to get a tutorial, it described how you need to sync your videos. I did that and for some godforsaken reason, it deleted EVERYTHING on my ipod. How annoying is that?!?!?

Well, live and learn I guess. Its a new toy so it will take me a week or so to get used too.

And to answer your question, its in AVI format. I needed to use TOTAL VIDEO CONVERTER to convert to a readable quicktime format for the iPod. Its odd though, it took literally 10 seconds to convert, it still has the AVI format icon, but now its usable for Quicktime and/or iPod. Pretty cool. I am using the trial version so for now my vid has the total video converter watermark on it. But I may just have to buy this program...

PS Based on someone elses suggestion in another thread, I checked out TOTAL VIDEO PLAYER and TOTAL VIDEO CONVERTER. Works great!!! I haven't tried it yet but I am wondering if I can use the software to convert a previously edited wedding video (its MPEG right now and I can't import to reedit a demo unless its in AVI format and like a friggin' genius, I neglected to save an AVI version of these weddings)...so if it works without losing quality, that would be great!

the sync function syncs the content of your ipod to the content of your itunes library. so if you prefer to keep itunes empty (like me), stick with a manual setting.

I just drag the file to library and then it syncs to the ipod...

AVI's seem to not cooperate with the iPod, 'specially if yous be on a Mac, since it be a Windows file format.

Arggh I be talkin like a pirate.

Yes, Total Video Converter is excellent. Other than Canopus Procoder, it is the best conversion tool around.

It's unfortunate that the video iPod can only play mp4 vids. Everything else needs to be converted by iTunes or another tool and suffers yet another lossy compression pass.
