iPhoto to FCP

I notice you can send photos to iWeb or iDvd from within iPhoto. Is there a way to send a photo straight to FCP or other studio applications?

The simple answer is NO. You have to go to where the photos are stored and import them into FCP as stills. You may also wish to set up the default time (length) in FCP BEFORE importing the files if you know how long you want them. It's much easier to do at the time of importing that it is later to adjust the time of each; unless, of course, they are going to vary in length...I think I've been rambling...

iPhoto, I trashed it from my drive. I use Aperture, very, very cool app for photos! If you are serious about your photos, get Aperture.

I heard good things about Aperture but I dont utilize photos in every project I edit so I can do without it. I think my workflow is "jacked up" LOL! I select photos I want to use in iPhoto then email them to myself. From the email, I save them to a folder on my desktop and then from there, I import them into FCP. There has to be a simpler way! LOL!

Export them from iPhoto to a folder of your choice on the desktop.

In iPhoto, choose the photo(s) then Share>Export>Export and tell it where to save it. The import that folder into FCP.

tangent alert- I still have both on my HD. Don't get me wrong, Aperture's "cool" and all- but I had the exact same functionality with CS2 and iPhoto. I'm using Aperture simply because it was expensive and I want to get some value from it- but I still end up using CS2 on every photo I sell to get it perfect. They need to make Aperture a little more robust in the tools department, specifically noise removal and contrast curves.
PS Can you export a slideshow into a QT movie from Aperture like iphoto? Maybe as I learn it better I'll like it more.

You REALLY need to learn Aperture. iPhoto's catalog is no where near as powerful, and the retouch tools in Aperture are killer, once you learn them. AND Aperture let's you edit photos in PhotoShop just like FCP handles "external editors" non-destructively. iPhoto doesn't handle RAW very well, either. But then, Photoshop is semi-16 bit, so it really doesn't do RAW as pure as Adobe claims. If you're doing professional level photography for a living on a Mac, Aperture and Photoshop are the combo you need. Aperture does NOT replace Photoshop, Apple never said it did.

Aperture is for large, professional level, RAW based photo libraries. If you don't shoot pro RAW for a living, it's probably more than you need.

In my documentary work I do TONS of photos, iPhoto never cut it. iPhoto just didn't catalog the way I needed. Aperture does, and integrates with Photoshop seamlessly, and non-destructive. I can make 100 variations of one photo in Aperture, and not have to make 100 different copies of the same photo. Saves drive space.

If the iPhoto with PS does what you need, you do NOT need the extra horsepower of Aperture. For those with hundreds of hundreds of photos like I work with professionally, iPhoto just falls so short...
BTW, if you say the iPhoto and PS gave you the same functionality, stick with iPhoto, you don't need the extra horsepower of Aperture.

I could go on, but bottom line is, iPhoto and PS will do some folks fine. But for those of us shooting RAW professionally and have lots and lots (hundreds) of photos to catalog and track, nothing can touch the Aperture/Photoshop combo.

Yes, Aperture was designed to work WITH Photoshop, not instead of it.

iPhoto allows you to export a QT MOV. I created an MOV and it works fine, but now I can't import that MOV into FCP. I get "File Error: Unknown File." WTF?

I want to kick Justin Long in the balls.

I've resorted to importing the JPGs -- how do I change the default duration for a still image?

EDIT: Found it. The search on the user manual is pathetic.

FCP>User Preferences>click General tab>enter value in Still/Freeze Duration field.
