Chinese firm says iPad is a copy

The president of a Chinese electronics firm claimed the iPad, Apple Inc.'s recently unveiled foray into the tablet market, was a copy of one of their products.

Xiaolong Wu, president of Shenzhen Great Loong Brother, said when the iPad makes it to China, "we won't have any choice but to report them … it will certainly affect our sales," of the company's P88, which resembles an over-sized iPhone, Wired reported Monday.

Wired said there were several significant specification differences in the products, including battery life, a 250-gigabyte hard drive in the P88 that the iPad does not have, the choice of microchips and point that the P88 runs a Windows operating system.

Wu, however, said the products were "completely identical" and that the company would charge Apple with "plagiarism" if it the California company opens up sales in China.

While I don't see a real case for infringement here, I do think it's interesting that when Apple makes it, the technology is called "revolutionary".

Yeah, especially since it won't work with Flash and can only run one app at a time. It's a glorified iPhone without the ability to make calls. Not that there is anything bad about that, but it's not revolutionary.

marketing. simple as that. if that thing was going to be revolutionary, it should "piggy back" on an existing At&T Iphone account, and have phone, and Video calling built in. This way you can speaker phone with other Ipad owners. that would have been revolutionary.

A while ago, when twixtor came out with its frame interpolation/production/estimation engine, one of the origional thoughts on the technology was to liscence it to Video phone software, so the video phone only neds to run like 6-7 FPS and the built in software would add frames to make it asmoother 18 or so FPS of playback, this way you can have higher resolution video calls, using existing bandwidth.

THAT would have been revolutionary. imagine a 3G/4G live video conference that you can carry around with you... you can kind of do that with a lap top but the IPAD would have been the perfect vehicle.

its application to Video conferencing would have been amazing... business COULD have been done easier, and talking to loved ones doesnt need Skype, just your Ipad....

LMAO

Love that line:

There's no such thing as an iPod. The word "iPod" is a marketing tool for a hard drive with software that plays mp3s. Yeah, doesn't sound so sexy now, does it you chimps? And an "internet communications device" is officially the douchebaggiest way of saying "it has a browser." So actually it's just a phone that plays mp3s and has a browser. SNORE.

what chutzpah that a chinese company is accusing anyone of IP infringement, considering that the odds of the Windows OS on the P88 is probably pirated. when the ipad first gets to China, it will also probalby be pirated.
