Invoicing setup you use

What software program, app, website, etc., do you use for invoicing? Is it paid or free? If paid, how much?

I've been using Invoice-Generator.com, not paid, but wanting a more streamlined setup.

I keep falling behind on invoices. Need to get a good setup to do from my phone.

I've been happy with FreshBooks. Not using half of the features they offer, but it's pretty convenient once setup.

But it's not just for invoices, but for accounting and tracking all aspects of doing business.

They have a start out plan that lets you kick the tires with up to 5 clients for $15 per month. If you need more, but manages less than 50 clients the price is $25 per month.

If you're just looking for the invoice, FreshBooks might mean over paying just for that. If you can use more of their services (maybe replace something that you're not happy with?) it makes more sense.

I haven't really tried a lot of services like this, but FreshBooks has kept updating their service and feels modern... for what that's worth. And I guess for an active business, a small monthly fee to stay organised is well within "the cost of doing business".

I had Freshbooks for a couple years but switched to https://www.waveapps.com/ a few years ago and haven’t looked back. Wave is free and also does all the accounting stuff that Freshbooks does (I use the accounting tools heavily to run my business). There are a few quirks, but at the end of the day it’s free so.....

I am not the best person to take advice from in this arena, but I use a free iOS app called “Tiny Invoice.” It’s extremely easy and sends fairly simple invoices. There are no bonus accounting features or anything like that. Just choose client, job, rate, quantity, and send.

I never learned any rules about invoice etiquette. The app automates an email that says “Thank you for your business!” that I just leave set to the default, and I think my clients think it’s a bit silly. I’m not sure what else I’d say in that email though.

Re: Wave, I'm working through some finance reports now and have discovered a major hiccup that may make Wave no longer a good option on the accounting side of things for some people (still a good invoicing app). The short of it is they just rolled out a new bank account integrating vendor and have limited your bank account connections to one, so if you use multiple banks that will be a problem if you're looking for automatic linking and tracking across multiple banks. When this new rollout happened it looks like my business credit card became unlinked for the entire year of 2019 so I'm going to have to do a workaround to upload each month's credit card statement and then go back through them all to make sure they're properly categorized.

Will be time consuming, but I don't mind too much because it will help me be VERY familiar with all of my expenses for the year. However, this is a good example of one of the "quirks" I mentioned above - inconvenient, but not a deal breaker for a small business of one (and at the end of the day it's free).

For drone work we have an accountant and use xero. I'm not sure what their customer service is like but the accountant knows absolutely everything so there's never any frustrating troubleshooting.

I assume most accounting software/services would be pretty similar but don't actually know how it compares. If you have a dedicated accountant you may be able to get a xero bundle thrown in.
