Investing and Netflix .....

I thought about buying some stock in Netflix when it was around $18.00 a share; I just looked up today and it's $175.00 a share in the last 15 months

I'm not sweating it. I made some nice 'small' gains with Marriott and some other stocks the last couple of years. But damn, what a gain.

Another one I owned (and sold for profit) is Sirius.

1.64 a share. I bought shares at .05 a share and sold at at a profit but now it's up again. i don't know, I still don't trust it yet.

Anyone else invest ?

I invested in Imax at about 15$ a share about half a year ago. It's now at 28/share. Thank you 3D!!!!!

It's hard to invest after the initial 'boom'... people still say Apple is a bargain stock compared to where they think it will rise to... I'm staying clear of apple, however I'm sure I'll regret it when the stock is double in a year or two. I like investing in small companies I think will do very well versus giant companies that might continue to do well. I like the specialized markets. I don't invest in companies like Panasonic even when they look to have a promising camera launch like the af100... because their company is so big, that if you include all the other divisions, the prosumer camera market won't really factor in against TV's, dvd players and microwaves... etc. Their quarterly results will hardly reflect the success of one division, especially a smaller one. With that said, I have found solid refuge and safety in Disney and McDonalds. It's good to have half in aggressive bets and half in solid slow growth bets.

Regarding your Netflix... unless we see a big competitor rise very soon, it will continue to grow as more people my age are forsaking cable and watching netflix on our PS3's and Xbox entertainment centers.

I subscribe too what Buffet said

When everyone is greedy, be afraid. When everyone is afraid, be greedy (I'm probably paraphrasing)

I have been in and out of Sirius for the last two years, and find it to have no peer in it's class for an under $5 media stock...

That being said, I think the best news for Sirius is baked in already for 2011, and very unlikely you'll see it go up another 100-200% any
time soon unless the overall market or auto industry has another banner year... SIRI has too many outstanding shares,
too many retail investors with short term trading mentality, few institutions and Liberty media's stake is a little too high for
the long-term investor to feel very good about in 2012... I'll likely be in it again short term this year...

Netflix I think also seems a little rich near $200/share, and unlikely to repeat the gains of 2010...
Options may be the safer bet with Netflix...

Avid had a nice pop since releasing Pro Tools 9, and will likely rally into Q4 earnings report, but they were severely underperforming before then
and will likely sell off immediately after the report as SIRI traditionally does...

Unfortunately, European financial woes and bitter partisanship may have more of an impact on domestic stocks in 2011 than our own economic conditions, so it is always interesting
and in Jim Cramer I rarely trust...

My 2cents...

J.R. what service do you use to trade? Are you a madman with it or do you buy something then watch it for a long time (after lots of research of course) and THEN sell at the right time? Lots of this stuff interests me so I hope you don't mind a few questions.

It would be interesting to buy a certain number of shares from a company (or 1 even) and in a week make a $10 profit on it. Sounds dumb but to me the thought of it all has always fascinated me.

I'm new to investing; only a couple of years experience.

I research, buy and then sit and then sell, like you asked.

I've been using Zecco.com for it's low trade prices. I do have an ETrade savings account that at once was 3% interest but has since dropped to 1.3% (I think)

I have a trading account as well as a Roth IRA account.

EDIT

Always make sure you cover your trade cost. Buying and selling each requires this.

ie. To buy a stock at $5.00 a share, it cost you $5.00 PLUS the cost to buy it (The brokerage fee) of say $3.50. So you're in $8.50 now. Better to many as many shares as you can because the trade price is per transaction NOT share.

I've been investing for 5+ years now (plus side to my mother working in the investment/banking industry) - my 3 biggest ones are Hasbro (up 45%), Blackboard (up 50%), and Approach Resources (up 305%). The one dragging me down now is Energy Recovery, Inc, which deals with desalination processes, it was up over 50% and then the gulf oil spill occurred and it's down 40% from what I bought it at. My last big investment was in the clean energy area, but I really want to get in to some media/tech stuff - with Netflix being one of them. while the huge stock growth might be tapering off there is little doubt that with Netflix taking up 20% of bandwidth during peak internet hours that it is here to stay and will only be getting bigger. a few I've been tracking/considering are Canon, Adobe, Dreamworks, and Time Warner - I need to graduate and make real person money again before I can drop any more in to the market though. This sort of stuff is incredibly interesting and I love the risk and gambling nature behind it - and also selling and making some decent cash :)

Best,
Adam
