Interview light help!

I'm about to shoot an interview on Friday at D.C., the captiol building. It will be in an office. I found out today that getting all my lighting gear through security is going to be almost impossible.

Thus, I've considered shooting with no lights. In terms of were to place the subject in a typical office with a window, what would be the best? Do I just put them away from the window and white balance? I'm a bit nervous on how to get the best picture. I just dont want to have the color temps off and have a nasty pic.

Pair down your equipment and just take what you need. Surprisingly enough, people have shot interviews in the capitol before. As long as security is aware you will be coming as the guest of someone, they will take the time to run your equipment through security.

I work in a government building myself and our police force is quite used to checking through the equipment and packages of our guests.

The capitol is more secure then my building, but I don't expect you would have trouble getting a few small lights screened, provided they have warning and you allow plenty of time. Take a couple of heads and a couple of stands and leave everything else at home. Even better if you can put your lights in milk crates so there's no place to hide anything.

As far as white balancing, it's really impossible to tell you exactly what to do without knowing the existing lights there. I'm of the opinion that natural lighting is always more flattering then practicals, but this might not work depending on the location of the office in reference to the sun.

Re: Interview light help!

Hi:

I shot interviews with a few Senators a couple of years ago (pre-9/11) in the Hart Building. It was a pain and yes, the security did go through everyone of our 16 cases so just make sure you have enough time allocated and go for it.

The security guys were cool they are just doing their jobs.

Something like a Kino Diva 400 with daylight tubes would make a nice fill for a window lit interview.

All the best,

Dan

I recently bought a kit of Dedolights and they would be ideal for your situation, it is just one larger briefcase and everything is included.
