Internet TV on demand

Hi everyone,

looks like there is some opportunity for me to work with these guys - being Czech and what not...

I think it's a great concept, especially for a relatively small community like ours, to broadcast over the internet, share stories, successes, gossip, travel tips, whatever.

I have some reservations to the look of the site, as well as technical quality of some of the footage, but that's something that can probably be fixed fairly easily.

I want to approach the owner of this with some tips for improvement from end-user perspective, so I registered for a 3-day free access, so anybody here can check it out. I'd appreciate if you give me honest, constructive criticism as that's what I am looking for. If you don't understand Czech (which will be mostly the case), just look around the site, watch some clips, and let's talk about it...

When you go to the site, click on 'Watch TV' button at the top, then you can enter the following login info (hopefully simultaneous access from multiple locations is supported):

I'm very interested in this subject but for reasons that may not be very helpful to you. I currently work for a company that's developing technology for broadcasts such as this to ride on internationally (I'm actually forwarding this info to some suits in the office).

Can you be more specific about what your role would be? (web, UI, etc)

Well, I would love to be in that role (it's my profession), but I think they can't afford me (yet). If I had any role, it would be a freelance reporter/cameraman. I travel a lot, both back to Czech Republic and within North America, and my interest in social, political and travel documentary could fit their programming needs. I'd be doing this on part-time basis, not as a full-time engagement.

However, as a full-time software designer/IT consultant, I can definitely see where that website is lacking, in respect of both aesthetics and usability. Chances are I overlook things, though - that's why I'd like to get other people's opinions as well.

Business-wise, I don't know if they would even listen to me. I have a lot of experience dealing with business analysts (that's my job), so I can list a hundred things that can be improved upon, but since I don't have actual practical experience with business strategy, developing business plans, pricing models, etc., I don't see why anyone would take my opinion seriously :embarasse .

Folks - it will take you all of five minutes to look at the site and comment. Knowledge of the Czech language is NOT required.

Just high level opinion here...

(1) There needs to be an easier path to demo the product, a few seconds without a signup path so casual users can check it out quickly. We've all seen the apprehension by even us dvxusers to signup for triggerstreet.com to see something with a built in interest as it is for example, much less something completely new.

(2) I don’t see prepay working without a comprehensive demo of the different programming options. Again, free demo. No one knows the quality of the interviews, quality of the video/audio, etc. Pre-pay for an unknown will be a hard/no sale. And the quality may be excellent but the users machine may not handle it.

(3) Aesthetically, it needs a complete overhaul frankly. Perception as we all know is half the game and my perception is that it’s an in-house, low/no budget venture. Especially for a pay service. It doesn't take much at all to make even a one man show "look" like a major corporation on the net and it's important obviously.

(4) Is there a download involved?

(5) Is my account portable i.e. can a traveler access his account from any machine?

(6) What language are the broadcasts?

Again, that's just my quick opinion/views/questions. Overall it's a great idea and services like these are gaining momentum (there are several that aren't public yet and the cable/satellite guys are involved as well).

The logo looks great imo, it's everything below the header that's an issue in my opinion as far as FAQ, quick demo (no signup).

And a purely Czech language broadcast may be the angle here. This is a service that will become saturated market wise as networks specific to this sort of delivery gain traction, major players get involved, etc. Finding a niche now (Czech or specific language only) will be important.
