Internet on your Post Machine

Just wondering how many people have their post production machine (Editing, VFX, etc machine) hooked up to the net and use it for surfing or your email client or do you have a separate laptop or system for that kind of stuff.

If you don't have your primary post machine hooked up to the net, do you still have a virus scan program on the machine?

Just wondering how everyone views this topic.

I have always had the LAN connected to my desktop for editing.

Since getting a MacBook Pro i have been editing on that a lot more, and is always connected. Even have EVDO for it, when im in the field.

I do run Avast anti virus on my XP Desktop box, and i have a Hardware firewall for the network.
 
All of our post computers are on a seperate network then our internet computers (full virus protection) or office computers (basic virus protection) and these are always connected. We don't use any virus protection software anymore (as it has expired) on the post systems, except for the computers that manage and import the video/audio files. If you keep your internet traffic off your post machines network, the only way you're getting anything is from a file put in from the inside of your building/company on to an actual post machine. But the way we're set up..... there are no disc drives in the post machine (except for a DVD drive not accesable from the outside)..... so the only way somebody can get something in here is with a USB/Firewire drive (but you have to get past the motherboard password.); All incoming media is put in through the import computers (which have the virus protection.).
 
Yep - my post machine is hooked up to the web and armed to the teeth with NOD32 antivirus, SpyBot S&D , Comdo anti-malware and a decent hardware firewall. All of this stuff has a pretty low overhead (and small footprint) so it doesn't cripple the machine if I'm rendering and a scan starts :)

Not to mention I use CommonSense(tm) anti malware protection too - best you can get for free :Drogar-Happy(DBG):
 
Absolute NO GO here. None of our workhorses is connected to the internet.
Why should they? If somone want to go online he can turn arround and use a computer yust for that.

Running all thet antivirusmalwaretrojan softwareware is not known as a performance booster.

I like lean decided systems.

Right now, I use the internet on my editing system.

I am planning on getting a new computer in the coming weeks (woohoo!) and after I get it I'm planning on using my old computer for all my internet needs, and keep the new one nice and clean (although I figure I will be using it for certain OS updates when needed).

I've never had any real issues though, I have a bunch of virus/spyware programs that I run a couple times a week, and leave them off whenever I'm working on stuff.

As someone else stated, a little common sense can go a long way with this type of stuff. Stay away from things that may have a poor effect on your computer (porn, torrents, etc).
 
My MacbookPro is connected, and I actually surf the net all the time while digitizing without any problems.
