Internet issues rant.

Bad net connect rant:

So we have high speed here. That means for use we can normally upload, dowload @ 600K no limit until, they changed the rules without any notice (Bell Canada, Sympatico) so we now have a 60gb cap. For anyone working in uncompressed video, like we do, well, it costs us an extra $70 last month. And I don't get to check where my limit is at. I have to guess. That's a good one.

Another beef, we have high speed and for the past hour I'm running at 3K upload/download. I'm guessing because it's taking me 2 minutes to update at every click I make. I find the 'cafe'... 2 mins, I click 'create thread'.... 2 mins. I type in anything...2 mins. No rebate for wasting my time and productivity.

Last year I did a gig for Mark Johnson. The day after my last upload, exactly,
my internet went down to staying online for only 3 mins per hour then dropped out. That lasted for 6 weeks. No reimbursement. Frustration? Forget about it.

It's getting to the point where peoples livelyhood will or is now depended on the net. If with this bad service, I or others start losing money because of lack of service, duh, can you see the lawsuits I'm starting to see?

It's not just a pain on the ass, there's money involved here.
And I thi9nk a couple slaps in they're face may get thier crap together.
I'ts a good thing I don't make a living at this, yet, but in a few years, I'l'l be getting a lawyer and suing thier ass for screwing me out of work.

I know, I'd lose. Maybe not if a bigger company bigger stood up and demanded minumum service laws.

Expect to see this post in about...2 minutes.

that's crazy it's operating so slow. at that speed you might as well be using a 56k modem.

That really blows, whats the SLA on your current plan, and can you argue that they are not upholding there end?

Contrary to what Craig said, I have been happy with my BellSouth DSL, until it was sold to ATT. It was Time Warner's Road Runner that twice has sent me back to DSL, from connections at 48kb to just disappearing all together, I won't go back to them again. I would contact your provider, and demand a solution before dumping them. You are throwing away money for nothing at this rate.

Every internet and cell ohone provider sucks from time to time.

Changing from one to an other doesn´t solve the problem.

What I hate is the asymetry. If you don´t stick to your contract they shut your line down,
if they don´t deliver what is promissed in the contract - nothing happenes.
Try to sue them for lost time/monry/client, - good luck.

Sometimes it scares me how WWW reliant we are. If my line is down for only a view days if feel amputated.

It happened to me last week, three days without internet..........:2vrolijk_08:........
I was all the afternoon in the library with my laptop to get into the net......It's like a drug (D.A.S, dvxuser addicts society)........

The worst thinh was that the technician was here all three days, but he always said that the roof was wet and he couldn't climb there to fix the wimax antenna.....I got fed up and I fixed it myself (which wasn't enough cause the antena was totally burnt...don't ask me why...).

Hmm, I not sure where I heard this, but the UK and American communications infratruacture is a bit of a massive hack, as in its really mixed up (old technology with new technology bolted on) so there is a lot of legacy equipment to support.

Unlike say for example South Korea which has had its entire communication infastructure laid down with fibre optics means that they have some of the most fastest (and consistent ) internet speeds in the world.

Thats probably the reason why bandwith has to be shared around in any given area, sure you may be advertised as having XX M/Bits but usually thats the theoretical maximum.

Anhar,

It's pretty extreme from one end to the other. Right now is fine and back to normal.
So for how long? A client wants x footage by tomorrow and here I am, ooops, I have no connection, it may take a week, oooops. Deadline missed, money gone. Sooory.

It's a huge give and take here. 600K speed is what we pay for, under 60gb load, now, and charged more per mb dl, but what happens when I can't upload or download anymore because there is no access, and for who knows how long?

Anyways, I've made my point I hope.
At some point, when enough money is on the line, someone will sue someone for something. And these net 'service' providers are asking for it.

My work is done here.

Has anyone ever sued a software company for buggy software(and won)?
I think we're in a day and age where big companies can get away with not delivering what they promise and the average consumer just thinks "that's just the way it is"...... and they're right.....

It's hard to think we are the first ones. How can a world that depends on internet for thier commerce not hold some resposibilty to the provider? Is it 'you work today' followed by' your off for a few weeks, sorry, but hey, we wont let you know your going to be off or for how long, and we will ofcourse bill you for time not spent..'

Where does liabilty lie? At some point this **** has to get straightened out.

How the fk it is it I have this problem and the big corps dont? Else we would have heard of it right? So, WTF. Is it just me living in a god damn bubble here or what?
Fkn BS.

No one else has a problem doing commerce online? Ooooookay.
Fkn BS man.
I'm stumped at the moment, lol.

There was an episode on the 5th Estate or something comparing "high-speed" from 3 or 4 providers. Bell came dead last.

When users complained about the speed they were "upsold" to the next tier. Speeds still weren't any better.

It's only when the television cameras showed up at Bell that their PR person explained that they are "theoretical" maximum speeds. They also admitted that because some neighbourhoods have an older hardware infrastructure that it is NOT possible to hit the speeds they are advertising.

I hate Bell. I got tired of being raped for my telephone service and jumped to my cable provider's telephone service as soon as it was available in my area.

Good luck, Raptor.

how much are they charging you raptor? and is there any way you can switch over to a cable modem?

Yeah, Bell Sympatico sucks ASS. I can't tell you how many times the service goes down when I'm in the middle of work (online). It's also frustrating when the speed gets so slow that in a (cam) meeting you end up talking like those foreign correspondents on CNN...responding...5...seconds later.

Because they use probably use expensive T3 lines @ DS5 Level,
and not reliant on public consumer broadband access .

That would do it. I didn't know that. Thanks.

My brother actually handles the account, this one and another.
It's a little over $50 a month with additional penalty charges when we upload/download
over 60gb as we found out. It was unlimited but...supriiiise, hehe.

We've talked about changing to cable several times. We havn't decided yet.

I even wrote a little c++ program that keeps checking the internet for connection and
logs the results to a text file when there are any changes in connection.
I wanted to document how bad our service really was and show it to them.
If you could have seen a couple of the logs, you would have flipped. Every 3
minutes,on,off for weeks.

We haven't had that fiasco repeat itself in the past year but we get little problems like
last night, at least once a week, often more.

But they never give us a break on the bill, ever.In fact with the 60gb cap before extra
charges now, the service value has gone down even more.

Another reason to change I guess. I'm sure cable has it's issues also.

wow, that's horrible for 600k. i get something like 15mb for that.

I think we're listed as having 10mb capabilty. At first glance I would assume that means Mega Byte, when in fact they mean Mega Bit. So, a Byte being 8 bits, right off the bat we can divide that by 8 and get 1.25 mega bytes per sec. In practive however I've only seen half that, 600 K bytes per sec tops which is about half.

I can live with that as long as the service is consistent. It's not. It's here then there, up and down and all over the place. Undependable is what I'm saying.

I think it has to do with these guys having monoplies over the market.

In the past 3 years or so, there have been maybe 3 or 4 times when my internet has gone down. Normally it was going again within the hour. On one occasion, it was down for more than 24 hours.
The provider (cable) credited me for the downtime. Bell only offers you deals or "goodwill" credits when you leave (or threaten to).

Now that I switched my phone service, they're trying to woo me back with prices 1/3 of what I was paying them before. Sorry. Too little too late.
