International Sales Job

Hello all,

I recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Writing & Linguistics with the hopes of using it for a copywriting position. I haven’t found a full-time position yet, only freelance work. My time freelancing has allowed me to figure out what I really want out of a career: to work and travel internationally (I don’t mind a company stationing me somewhere to avoid paying for frequent travel).

I believe my personality lends itself to a sales position. I ask questions first, sell later (much later). I research a situation first before putting myself in it, but I am also adaptable, able to fit in after entering as the outsider.

We’ve all read about that fish out of water who botched the international sales meeting by not bothering to research the local customs. How does one get that kind of sales job, let alone get it without putting in the time and research? I ask because I’d do the exact opposite, should I be given the chance.

English is my only fluent language, although my French is intermediate. I want to learn another language because I’m into self-improvement. The situation will dictate what that language is… (You would think monolingualism would preclude people from an international sales job, but the salespeople I met in China, France, and England were decidedly monolingual also. Hooray for English being ubiquitous!).

I’ve searched job listings online specifically for one that requires international travel, but they all seem to be scam listings – jobs based on commission and travel done on your own dime, advertised in grammatically unsound syntax.

Where to even begin? International travel is a rarity for Nebraskans. Don’t even start on international business.

I suppose I’m just looking for advice. This isn’t a business forum, but there’s no doubt that creative people attract people from all walks of life, and somebody may know something. I posted this here for that reason.

Thanks for any help, advice, guidance, leads, etc.

Regards,
Sean

P.S. I'd very much like to say: I'm working the ___________ account.
