International Repair dilemma

Ok it is not nearly as big a deal as it sounds but, always a but. My firewire port has crudded out on me. I bought the camera from Rush about 5 months ago. But alas I am in the great land above the US. Can I get the camera fixed up here? If so where (I am in Winnipeg) Or do I have to send it back to the States, and am I going to smacked with duty.
Anybody got any ideas. Thanks

Re: International Repair dilemma

Try Panasonics web site for repair locations. Should be one near you. Call them directly and ask if they will service under warranty. I imagine Rush will reply here too. :)

Re: International Repair dilemma

Hi,

If you bought the camera in the US you have a US warranty not a Canadian one. Most likely the firewire port will not be covered under warranty as there are too many things that you can do to kill it, like plugging it in while "live." It is a myth that 1394 is a live plug and play.

With that understanding it probably would be easier to just have it fixed there. If the board got fried, that is an expensive repair, like $800, if the connector got a bent pin, somewhere in the $200 range.

And yes, Panasonic Canada will fix it, just not under warranty, they will tell you to take the invoice and settle up with Panasonic US. But since the firewire port is so prone to user malignment, its pretty hard to get it covered by warranty, which covers a manufacturer's defect.

Hope this helps,

Jan

Thanks for the Reply Jan
" It is a myth that 1394 is a live plug and play. " It would be really nice if that was a bit bolder in the manual. Damn 800, that hurts.

What is interesting in all of the times over the years I have seen the subject come up on many different cameras, on many different forums, no one ever talks about why the 1394 ports stop working. They just stop working. And nobody says why. If going 6 pin to 6 pin, there isn't much opportunity for disaster, but on 6 to 4 like on a camcorder, the distater is waiting to happen. Hopefully you have only bent a pin and it will be the cheaper fix.

Best regards,

Jan

Re: International Repair dilemma

Out of curiosity, were you using the DVX for capture? Or were you using DVRack?

Re: International Repair dilemma

Capture!
I do not usually use it, but my wife had the camera I use for capture, so I said to my self, "Self, how bad could capturing one tape be".
Perhaps the problem is my talking to myself!

Re: International Repair dilemma

Or refering to yourself in 4th person. :D
