Internal vs External hard drives

Re: Internal vs External hard drives

Why is it better to put software on the internal drive instead of the external drive? Can you successfully run software like DVD Studio Pro or whatever from the External drive?

Re: Internal vs External hard drives

I bought a Seagate Barracuda 160GB internal drive and so far it has worked alright. Cool thing is that my Quicksilver recognized all 160GBs on the drive. The bad thing is that sometimes when I capture a video clip with FCP HD that is longer than 5 minutes, FCP freezes and my computer crashes. It wont do it all the time, but it does happen. Any help?

Re: Internal vs External hard drives

Take warnings about a specific brand, Lacie in this thread, with a few grains of salt. Any product can be defective or fail, and an individual will seek others with the same problem. You'll then find a message board with ten people all saying, "Yes, that product sucks." Doesn't matter if it's a drive, a TV, a car, a new Mac CPU or OS, etc. What you don't see are the thousands of people whose identical product is working fine. In short, to use a market research term, beware of skewed sampling.

Between home and 10 years at a design company, I've owned or used on a daily basis about 4 external Lacie drives. None of them failed, but the internal drive in our old Mac 7350 server did. Those Lacies were only replaced because they became too small for our needs, or because we moved from SCSI to FW.

Of course, I have no doubt there are people who have owned a bad Lacie or two. Like every other brand.
