Internal sound card, external audio adapter or both?

I recently bought a Focusrite 6i6 audio adapter (2nd gen with USB2) for some voice over work direct to computer and noticed that it has an SPDIF optical input. I planned to replace my PCI-based Omega Claro II sound card with this but wondered if there was any benefit to keeping the internal sound card and connecting it to the Focusrite through the optical connector? Or would having both be more load on the CPU, latency, sound quality etc. Should I just replace the card and directly connect the Focusrite through USB? I'm using my PC for audio and video editing and have Yamaha HS7 monitors. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think using both at the same time through the optical connector offers no benefit?

I don't think it's possible to have two audio devices assigned to the same destination anyway.

There could be some slight possibility of better noise rejection using the optical interconnection. At the expense of somewhat increased support complexity. However, in the long-term, the optical interface will disappear and/or become unsupported by your software and/or operating system. Basic and ordinary USB will likely have a much better expected life cycle in the long term.

Thanks Richard and Rick. I figured that it was kind of a contrived way to go about it. I guess I also didn't want to waste the card which has been pretty decent.
