Internal Capture Scratch

Howdy all,

2 questions, I am running two internal Hitachi Deskstar 1tb, 32mb cache st 7200rpm. They are both SATA HDD's one running my system, the other as simply storage. All of my editing is done on 3-2tv G-drives connecyed via fw800. Now would response, and or rendering be more time efficient if I did the bulk of my editing on the internal SATA that is used only for storage?

Second, would things run smoother if I were to dedicate a HDD purely as a render asset?

thank You

Are you having playback issues? Dropped frames? You probably will not notice a speed increase by changing to your internal drive. The speed of the rendering will be mainly determined by your processor speed, the amount of processors your computer has, and the amount of RAM you have. Usually your HDD is waiting for your computer, not the other way around. If you are having playback issues through your firewire 800 connections, you can try to move to the internal drive.

Sata 3.0 = 3.0 Gbps (that's bits....not bytes)
FW800 = 800 Mbps

And for your second question, it has been my experience that dedicating one drive as your render drive and one as your capture drive does not speed anything up, if that is what you mean. Can you clarify on what you mean by "run smoother"?

Almost everything will be faster on your internal drives except editing on another computer as you can just disconnect and plug into the other computer. Just try it for your self. You don't mention your system but if it is a Mac Pro adding a 3rd 1Tb drive and RAIDing the 2 drive will increase speed even more. Even though rendering is a RAM/Processor thing it still writes files to the hard drive which is the biggest bottle neck unless you are editing on a G4.
