1) does 60I footage have interlacing issues and if so why do i read that de - interlacing 60I footage degrades the quality.

2) When Capturing 24p or 24pa footage into a new session / time line is it best to use pulldown while capturing or after ....and will this remove any interlacing

Thank you

60i footage only has 'interlacing issues' if you do something to screw up the fields or you play it back on a device that cannot properly playback interlaced footage. Deinterlacing degrades the quality because at its worst it tosses away half of your vertical image resolution and at its best it attempts to fill in gaps by 'guesstimating' what pieces of the image are missing.

60i is interlaced. Hence the "i" in the name. But the only time you need to worry about deinterlacing is when prepping the video for upload to the 'Net.

As for removing the pulldown from 24p/24pa, the short answer is "remove it during capture."

The longer answer is, "it sort of depends on the footage and on your NLE." Since we're talking FCP, you should remove the pulldown from 24pa during capture using the "remove advanced pulldown" setting. But FCP cannot remove the pulldown from 24p standard footage during capture. Instead, capture it as normal 29.97 footage, then use Cinema Tools to reverse telecine the 24p footage.

Will removing the pulldown remove any interlacing? Well, considering that, by removing the pulldown, you are restoring the images back to a true 24p ("p" meaning "progressive," the opposite of interlaced), um... yeah. That's what progressive is. The reason you encounter interlacing in the 24p footage (which is only in 24p footage viewed at 29.97) is that the pulldown adds a couple of interlaced frames to conform the 24p footage to 29.97 for recording.

Hello,

60i stands for 60 interlaced fields that are combined to make 29.97 frames. By issues with interlacing, do you mean that on your computer monitor you see the interlacing? If so, that's because your computer monitor is progressive as most are. The interlacing won't show up on an interlaced tv which is how it was originally intended to be viewed on.

Definitely remove the pulldown in 24p during capture or use a program like CinemaTools or DVFilm Maker to remove the pulldown after you have captured. DVFilm maker can also convert your 60i footage to 24p removing the interlacing and maintain almost all of the resolution due to it's frame analyzing software.

It's usually best to shoot 24p with advanced pulldown and always edit at 24p native if you can.

Best,
Andy
