interlacing problems when rendering for internet

my short film has some fast moving live backgrounds, which originally resulted in the dreaded interlace jaggies onscreen. I set the event properties to Reduce Interlace Flicker for those shots, and hurray, the problem vanishes, I can now render to a full AVI file just fine, no jaggies appear on playback.

But I'm now trying to rerender the same film for upload to youtube, and following Douglas Spotted Eagle's advice I selected .mp4 and the Ipod format - which works perfectly except I now have big smeary (i.e. more than one pixel high) jaggies in those fast moving live backgrounds again.

Since I'm running a PAL system, I thought maybe the jaggies were artifacts of resizing to the Ipod NTSC characteristics, so tried modifying the Ipod template settings to PAL 25 fps and frame size 360x288 - but no difference.

Any ideas, anyone?

First make sure your "Project Settings" is using the right PAL template, to mirror the kind of footage you are using. Then uncheck "reduce interlace flicker", and then export this way: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/11/09/exporting-with-vegas-for-vimeo-hd/
BUT with the following changes over the suggestions there:
1. Resolution 640x352 if your footage is widescreen, or 640x512 if not.
2. Bitrate 1600 kbps instead of the suggested ~5000/~8000 kbps.
3. Frame rate 25.00.
Keep the rest the same.

You're set. The guide will create a progressive output.

sorry, couldn't get that to work (quite possibly my fault as some of those fields were new to me), but it did lead to an apparent solution - I unchecked "reduce interlace flicker" on the individual events as you suggested, then in Project Properties changed Deinterlace method from None to Interpolate.

Thanks for your help.

Now to see whether Youtube's automatic file manipulation wreaks havoc...

Yes. "Interpolate fields" will be your best bet, though no conversion of fast-action footage from 50i to 25p will be perfect . . .

All is good, Youtube didn't choke or mess it up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRG5UZycBqA if anyone's interested - it was the fast scrolling DeathStar walls which were originally causing the problems. (Although while fiddling, I also tried creating a dummy project containing just the rendered avi file - and when that rendered to mp4, the fast scrolling walls were perfect, but now the panning stills (e.g. the spacecraft) went jaggy - ain't life a mystery?)

I'd never touched Project Properties Deinterlace method before, will definitely keep it in mind next time I have interlace problems. So does the event properties Reduce Interlace Flicker only affect the preview? I'd always assumed it affected output as well, perhaps i was dreaming...

Thanks again to Eugenia and David - I've been using Vegas for 5 years, but it still keeps surprising me, sometimes in a nice way.
