interlacing in 24p footage

I know this is a standard question but im still having a hard time getting this. I shot 24p not 24pa in squezed mode and captured it as regular dv 29.97 anamorphic footage but im getting interlaced frames every 4th or 5th frame. I thought i did this right. should i be editing in a 24frame time line with pull down removal, would that get rid of the interlacing. and when i exported it back out to 29.97 would it add the interlacing back in?

Barry, thanks for the reply. I love your book, it really helped me on the project im working on. Is there nothing i can do about the interlacing then. Again thanks for the book, kyle

When I said "yes", that's what I meant -- you understand the situation, and yes if you edit in a 24p timeline it will make the interlacing go away, and yes if you output to 29.97 it'll add it back in. You understand it properly.

How can you get rid of it? Don't go back to a 29.97 timeline. If you're outputting for a DVD, make a 24P DVD. If you're outputting for the web, make a 24P .wmv or .mov. If you're outputting to film, send out uncompressed targa files from the 24p timeline. But if you're outputting for broadcast (such as to BetaSP) or for some reason need to make a 29.97 tape, then you *must* pad the 24fps footage out to 29.97, and the way to do that is to add the interlace frame back in. It's not bad, it's necessary.

Hope that helps!

24p (F5) is SUPPOSED to be interlaced just like standard video is supposed to be interlaced. It's not an accident and it's not bad frames.

As Barry said you can convert to pure 24fps but that's only necessary if you have a specific reason to do so. (film, 24fps DVD, etc)

now that I think I've read that 10 times, perhaps it is okay to ask.

1. shoot in 24p or 30p
2. edit in 29.97 time line
3. make a 24 p dvd

by doing these steps, it will preserve the "de-interlacing"?? the LOOK?. I don't know if that is the right word.

but basically, 24p footage that I have shot and edited and then output to a "normal" DVD has ended up withOUT that "dvx magic". It looked like nothing special. so is this because I did not make a 24 p dvd?

well, I'm going to try it out in a short sequence anyway. here I go.

Nope. That's not the way you'd want to do it. If you want to preserve the look, you shoot in 24p, and then either:

a) edit in 24p timeline, and output 24p DVD

or

b) edit in 29.97 timeline and output 29.97 DVD

or

c) shoot 30p, edit in 29.97 timeline, output 29.97 DVD.

thanks. I'll let y'll know what I get. one thing I'm pleasantly surprised by is that it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would in slow mo. as much as 40% on a 24p clip. the other thing is that a 24p footage, side by side a 60i clip with Film Effects 2.1 looks great. ( phew!)
