interlacing 24p and 30p for network delivery

We are shooting a couple tv series and the network's production guidelines are 1080i 30 and 60i. We are shooting 24p and editing in premiere. Editing in a 24p sequence and exporting at 1080i 30 looks horrible. Does adobe automatically apply pull-down if you work in a 29.97 sequence and would this look better?

1080i 30 is 60i. 30 interlaced frames per second of 1080 is 60 fields per second.

How do you monitor your edit? Do you have a broadcast monitor connected to a capture card? That lets you see these issues in real time as you edit.

Most NLEs will not ordinarily handle 24p in a 60i timeline that well. You should probably cut in a 24p timeline, export a 24p master and then convert that to 60i. How are you delivering to the network?

If they want "1080i 30," then they want 60i.

You can export a 24p sequence as 1080/60i and it shouldn't be a problem.

You can't, however, export as 1080/30p and NOT have a problem, because 24p footage converts horribly to 30p.

Here's yet another example of why they need to STOP calling interlaced video "30 frames per second."

Premiere does, Vegas does, Edius does. FCP and Avid do not.

That said, if your footage is 24p, you should be editing on a 24p timeline. And yes, exporting a 24p file first is better, because it preserves 24p motion in your transitions, text, or anything you animate.
