INTERLACED Footage

Okay, here's the dilemma. I recently shot a documentary film using the dvx100b. The setting on the camera was 24p. I edited it using FCP 4.5 HD. Now with the finished product, I am trying to burn it to DVD, but can't because it came out interlaced.

The system settings for playback control are: RT- Safe, Video Quality- High, Pulldown pattern- 2:3:2:3.

The Sequence settings are: Pixel Aspect Ratio- NTSC- CC1R 601/DV, The Field Dominance is on Lower (Even), The Editing Timebase is 29.97, and the quicktime video settings are on DV/DVCPRO - NTSC @ 100% Quality.

Now I'm wondering what is wrong with these settings. What do they have to be in order for a 24p film to come out clear? Is there something wrong with the pulldown or editing timebase and what does it have to be? What is the best way to export to DVD? Quicktime movie or Quicktime conversion or Compressor?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DV/DVCPRO-NTSC is an interlaced format. Whre you have the Field Dominance set to Lower, that is interlacing. If you want a true progressive Seqeucne, set Filed Dominace to None. But the DVX100 doesn't do non-interlaced footage, so you're set up properly. And you would have had to shoot in 24pA mode. And you'd want to use the "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown" Easy Setup before you start droping anything into a timeline. The diffrence is that you'll see the Field Dominace field gray'ed out, and the Ediging Timebase as 23.98.

As for output, if you want faster, go out to a not self contained QT movie into Compressor. If you want quality, directly from the Timeline to Compressor, or use Bit Vice Pro. At this point in time, I prefer Bite Vice Pro, results are great, much faster than Compressor.

You're interlacing progressive footage with your current setup, which introduces Interlace Artifacts.

Delete all your Sequences, cause once you drop material into one, you can't change the settings without really screwing up the footage already in it. So delete all your Sequences, use Easy Setup as discribed above, create a new Sequence, re-edit it. Also, if you copy everything from the original Sequence, and create a new 24p Sequence, and paste, they'll get messed up.

BenB,

this is a great explaination. I´ll add that when a sequence is changed from the 29.97 preset to 23.98, it´s tab in the timeline usually dissapears. double click the sequence icon in the browser to reload it.

I hope it works out for him.

I'll just quickly second the BitVice advice.
Go buy!

It's a fantastic app! (If you're not on an Intel)
