Interlace Question?

Hi Everyone,
When I play my edited project back in the VIEWER my footage has "drag lines?" to it. It doesnt look as good as when I recorded it. When I print it to video it goes away, but it still looks a bit condensed/ poor quality. Why is this? Anyone know what I can do to prevent/fix this? Should I put some sort of filter on it?

My footage was shot in 24P setting (not 24PA) and captured into a DV-NTSC-24 timeline. Shot on DVX100B. I did color correct it a bit.

Any suggestions?

I have one, but you won't like it...

24p should be edited in a 29.97 timeline!! (Yikes). Unless you removed the cadence, 24p mode on the dvx shoots 29.97 to tape.

If you edited it in 29.97 you'd still see some interlacing caused by the 2 combined frames for every 3 progressive frames... but it would be much better than the forced 24 fps that you now have.

Also -- interlaced frames aren't necessarily a BAD thing. They aren't meant to be watched on a progressive scan monitor like a computer monitor so they look 'odd' but on a normal TV (non progressive scan) they will look fine. Plus, how many times do you want your viewers to STOP on a single frame and watch the lines dance?

Good luck,

If you are editing at 24p, the NLE should remove the pulldown to make the image you are seeing progressive without interlacing. This also can be done when you capture so that your footage is 24p without a pulldown once on your computer.

If you edit at 29.97 with the pulldown in you can remove the pulldown afterwards with a program like DVFilm Maker or TMPGenc. Captain Mench is right that you will have to have a pulldown in the footage anyways to play on a NTSC interlaced monitor or to go back to tape. However, it's usually better practice to edit at 24p native and then put the pulldown back in after you export your 24p file. FCP should be able to do it as well as After Effects or DVFilm Maker.

Hope this helps,
Andy

Careful, this can be extremely confusing if you read it just as you wrote it. Not sure what you really mean. 24p (AS A MODE SHOT WITH THE DVX) is 29.97 with pulldown cadence. The NLE WILL NOT remove this pulldown!

This also can be done when you capture so that your footage is 24p without a pulldown once on your computer.

Again, not correct - and VERY confusing.

Although FCP WILL remove advanced cadence as recorded with the DVX's 24pA recording mode... it will NOT remove 24p mode on capture.

If you edit at 29.97 with the pulldown in you can remove the pulldown afterwards with a program like DVFilm Maker or TMPGenc.

Ok... I've seen this posted before but I cannot comment as I haven't tried it myself. How it knows to remove 1 combined frame or no combined frames I don't know. I'd test before trying. But again, it might work, I haven't tried.

However, it's usually better practice to edit at 24p native and then put the pulldown back in after you export your 24p file.

As long as you mean 23.98 -- yes... it is better to cut in 23.98 progressive (as opposed to 24p which might be confused with 24p MODE on the dvx) and then let FCP send a cadence to it as you export to tape. FCP will do 3:2 cadence if you want to broadcast or even 2:3:3:2 if you want to have it removed later.

I hope THAT makes sense.

Thanks for your replies. I am editing on a 29.97 timeline and it was captured on that as well. Maybe it will look different on my TV like capt mench said? Do you guys have any suggestions for exporting video to get the best quality for the internet, such as youtube?

Also, Capt Mench, thanks for your great video tutorials, they have saved me so much time and frustration!!!

Kate...

I use the simple File - Export - QTConversion -- Broadband High. If it is 16:9 you'll need to hit OPTIONS and change size to 420x270. There are some other suggestions on the youtube site that might be better than the quality I get. It USED to be rather good compared to other crap put up there, but now with the HD option on youtube... mine just look darn crappy!
