Interlace Artifacts: trimmer vs. preview window

When I step (frame by frame) thru a 60i clip in my trimmer, I don't see interlace artifacts (i.e., the lag in the two fields making up the frame), but I see these artifacts very clearly in the preview window (at the SAME time I am observing the frame in the trimmer window without artifacts). The project is set up for 29.97 fps dv in project properties, with no deinterlacing, and the clip was recorded 60i. Can anyone tell my why the difference? Thanks much.

The trimmer window just shows a thumbnail of the video image. This thumbnail is at least half of the resolution of the original video, so you will not see the interlacing since it is only showing half of the lines. If the preview window is setup for Full, then all of the lines of the video are shown.

I tried changing the preview window to the lowest resolution, but I still saw the artifacts. Shouldn't the artifacts go away in the preview window if what you are saying is true?

It isn't the quality of the Preview window (Draft, Preview, Good, Best) that matters, it is the size of the Preview window. If you make the preview window smaller so that it is only showing the video at half size, then you should see the interlace lines go away.

I just tested it and that is what happens on my system.

Thanks rcampbel, I tried it and you are exactly right. In fact, I was able to get the artifacts to go away by keeping the window the same (full) size, but just reducing the quality to draft. I swear I tried this last night, but still saw the artifacts, but I must have been mistaken. Again, many thanks.
