Interior Day for night shot test.

OK as my upcoming schedule is limited to about 8-9 hours of shooting per day, I will be shooting a lot of my nightime scenes during daylight hours (talking about scenes that are meant to be entirely dark here). These are interior shots (my exterior night shots will actually be shot at night). So I have been doing some preliminary testing. Below I have an original shot - you can clearly see its taken under lighting. Followed by a version I created using an 8 point matte and a couple of filters. Thirdly is a version created using the Natress day for night filter - with no tweaks. Please keep in mind that the area where the boards are is essentially where I would have an actor so I tried to keep more fill here, whilst not totally destroying all the detail on the left side of the frame. The riight side is a wall outside the room. This is not a location I am using - just a spare room where I hoard crap. Using latest FCP. All shot on DVX100a with letus flip and 50mm 1.4 canon FD. On the original and Natress version the screengrab was taken from slug and the edges got screwed with - so please ignore.

Anyway please give me your feedback.

The shadows in "my version" are incredible.

looks really good already.

cant wait to see the finished project. "my version" looks better than the nattress too.

Definitely my Version. Natress version is just trying way too hard for the idea that moonlight is blue. My version looks pretty damn realistic.

heck, I'm just slapping a bunch of ND on the window, white-balancing for the tungsten lights in the interior, and letting the window light stay bluish.

they look good to me ...

but i do have to ask why didn't you put a person near the boards for the TEST ? no person! how can one make a final decision which looks best ?
though my 1st choice is "my version" but i'm not sure i would buy it if there was a person in frame .. then i might prefer the natress filter version as the slight bluish color tone may be more night to my brian and the "my version" could just look like low day light ? but again without a subject it's hard to tell ..
IMO if you have a subject/object - it should be included in a lighting test ...

Nice. I also definitely like your version better. Even though I'm not in FCP, I'd love to know your settings.

Here's a frame from a project I'm working on. The Day for Night was all done in cam and with lighting, but with minor tweeks in post. (50% multiply layer and -30% desat.) It was shot midday and the windows were gelled with full CTB. I also had a 250w gelled full CTB with a softbox in the room. If I remember correctly, I WBed to the bare tungsten.

Thanks for the comments. One thing thats hard in Japan is to push light through the window from exterior. My preferred choice would be to do that with CTB. In some shots I am just not able to because the apartment is 6 floors up for example and there is just nothing outside. So here I am trying to come up with a counter measure. As you know you have to be prepared forr everything. I am going to set up another test today. Ill use a human in the shot. I really would prefer to hit this shot with minimal cc.

Just a clarifying followup: the windows were gelled only because they were visible go some shots. All light actually comes from the gelled 250w softbox. There is a little spill past the blinds and curtains, but not much.
