Interesting Blockbuster Article

The one thing I enjoy about Hollywood Video as opposed to downloads and mailed movies- I ask the staff how the movie was. If it's a turd, they let me know. I have found the Manager has some similar tastes, so it works out great.

I used to work at blockbuster and would always tell people if a movie was super crap.

yeah, i have blockbuster online and i was super pumped when they switched to the unlimited in-store exchanges, which was cool for about 3 months before they changed it to only 3 a month. Now we only go to blockbuster about half as much as we used to. We also used to get a free coupon for a game rental every month (which are freaking 8 dollars!!@!?) but they took that away too, now you can get a "discounted" game rental by trading in an online rental at the store for the glorious low price of 5 dollars ...

Ben is currently looking for better rental options. :(

There were a couple of DVDs that I needed the other night, I needed them for reference and I didn't have time to wait for NetFlix to get them to me. I went to Blockbuster to pick them up thinking that it would be more convenient- what a nightmare! Things are horribly unorganized and it took me 15 minutes to find a movie because it wasn't on the racks, it was still over in the New Releases shelf- after being released almost a year and a half ago.

To top it all off I had to wait in a 20 minute line and pay a price almost equal to my 'unlimited 3 movies at a time' plan from NetFlix for a 5 day rental for two DVDs.

I have officially had it with Blockbuster, if that happens again I'll just go out and buy the damn things.

I'm amazed they're still in business. The store near me is so poorly managed they routinely leave the checkout counter unstaffed, their selection is almost comically bad, and the manager loves to pick fights with the customers over minor issues. The last straw was getting billed twice for movies that were returned.

i've never really liked blockbuster. i'm a netflix man now, but last year i lived across the street from hollywood video and was always amazed at the films you could buy for 3 bucks. I ended up buying more dvd's than renting.

if they would start renting porn, they would triple their business. i know for a fact i'd rather go to a blockbuster on the corner across from walgreens than down to the ghetto...

oh wait, i DL my porn. nvm.

For me, Block Buster has been a pretty successful option to NetFlix. I never know what I'm going to be in the mood to watch. I like walking through the aisles and looking at the dvd covers. (Sometimes it makes you wonder how the photographers ever got the job.) But I agree with those who find the experience less than pleasant. I have waited for movies to come back, been irritated by the lack of availability of a title I really want to see while 600 copies of J LO's newest bomb sit unrented. But like others, I find some of the staff helpful and sometimes get really good recommends from them. Hollywood Video closed it's doors here in Austin and now BB is the only option. We have some "Austin" video stores, but they are a bit of a drive.
I think BB needs to revamp their rental policy, set rates at a reasonable point, bring back the late fees, cut the "new release" v "older title" coupon crap and make some attempt to win back the people who have stayed with them.
