INT. Car -- Day

I am in preproduction on a film being shot in the Los Angeles area and have a bit of a question.

I have a dialogue inside a moving car during the day. Shot from the backseat. Under this bright Southern California sun I know I am going to run into a major issue of blown out windows and underexposed actors.

Ideally I would have the car mounted on a trailer and blast some 2ks through the front glass, but we're on a bit of a shoestring budget on this one.

I know I am looking for a bit of a magic bullet idea that may not even exist, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

You don't want to shoot in the front?

What are we seeing in this shot? A close u0 of their face? Or a wide shot of their body from the back of the seat?

Nah, two reverses from the back seat. We'll go as wide as possible from 3 feet away, but nothing too far out there. Side windows and windshield will most likely be in frame.

I would try to drive in a direction where no direct sun hits the actors. ND the windows in shot, some people on this forum also suggest some sort of transparent material from gas stations to tint the windows, I havent used that myself. Then daylight mini-flos close to the face of the actors to give you an exposure or maybe a more powerful diffused light you can plug into the cigarette socket for highlight/fill if the shot is wider.

Just shot this exact sequence in the desert last weekend.
Here's what worked for us:

1) Sunroof. 2) Light colored interior. 3) Pola. 4) Control what is in the b/g.
5) When we needed it we used a Litepanel kit.

M2, Nikon 24 and 50mm lens, HVX.
