Insuring your equipment

I'd like to insure my growing collection of video gear. I am not in business as a videographer and prefer not to set up an LLC or corp just to insure my gear.

Is there any reason not to just put it on my homeowner/renter's insurance policy? Or should I seek out a company that specifically insures photo/video gear?

I recently rented a camera, and they asked for an insurance certificate, which I did not have. Will having my gear on my homeowner's policy permit me to have such a document?

Finally, if you know of a good gear insurer in NY, please share the info.

Thank you,
Bob

naa, just use your home-owners if not starting a business. Call your agent and have him tell you thast, don't take my word for it.

I am not sure if your home owners insurance on its own will actually cover any damage done to your equipment sustained while in use out in the field. It only covers thing like if your house burns down. I had to introduce inland marine coverage into my policy and it covers any kind of damage what so ever (a kid walks up and put gum on my camera, I drop my camera, the camera just fails for no reason, etc) I am covered as a sole proprietor of my business (which is based out of my house, actually a rented apartment) and the only reason I would open up an L.L.C. would be to separate my personal assets from my business (incase the business got sued they couldn't take away my bed or car or underwear) but my insurance also covers up to $1,000,000 of liability so if I do get sued insurance will cover that much. I am only covering about $20,000 worth of equipment but the insurance, with $500 deductible, is about half my car insurance if that gives you a rough idea. Oh and my insurance agent works through state farm. I am pretty sure they are nation wide. To be honest you can just call any insurance agent and they would be more than happy to give you a quote. Pick 3 or 4 in your area, get quotes and decide what’s best for your situation based on necessity, not personal convenience. One more note, even if you are just using this equipment for personal use, the policy that I use still applies. Opening up and LLC or claiming it’s a business doesn't change anything. So it would for a small business or just an individual. Hope this helps and good luck.

Gear is relatively cheap, you liability isnt. If some schmuck trips over your cable and breaks his arm, that will cost you more than you camera. Make sure your liability is covered.
