Insuring rental equipment

Hi,

I'm buying a HVX-200 along with extra P2 cards, tripod, matte box, etc...and I'm planning on renting it out when I'm not using it. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with insuring equipment that will be used by a 3rd party. Particularly, who has the best rates and what I can expect to pay (I figure it'll be higher than just insuring it for my own personal use).

Thanks,

if you require that the people renting are insured and put you on the policy(and give you proof) then you will be covered - this is standard i beleive

damn dude... I just looked at your reel.... what software were you using?

Edit: looked at you res. Seems like the ususal suspects...lightwave... After Effects... etc.

Superb work.. I hope to attain that level one day.

Every rental house that I have used (LA area) requires a certificate of insurance naming them as a third party. For insurance I have worked through a broker named Film Emporium. A typical policy that covers both production liability and non owned equipment (rentals) has a minimum premium of about $1200 (2 to 4 weeks of coverage).

I do know that one rental house has an ability to sell renters short term coverage for those that don't have their own policy. I was second unit DP on a project this past summer and the production company didn't have a general liability policy but were able to get around the problem with some additional fees. The rental house that I sent them to was Wooden Nickel Lighting & Camera.

Perhaps you can correspond with them to see how they solved the uninsured renter issue.

X-Angel, thanks for the praise...I've been doing motion graphics and editing for about 9 years (6 of them in broadcast design and DVD menu design)...

That's crazy that you're from San Antonio, I used to live there and did work for a bunch of SA production companies. I worked for Video Wave/Sprocket doing broadcast stuff for them and ran Raging Bull Production's Smoke for 2 years.

Thanks to everyone else for the ideas...I'll check them out...

I have to ditto the comment about your demo reel! That was very cool and fun to watch! You definitely have a lot of talent! What is that effect called in the begining of your 2005 reel with the shots of the girls? Is that rotoscoping? It almost has a 3-Dish type look to it.

Thanks a lot Shooter...actually, the opening graphic was a series of still photos that I was given. I cut them out in Photoshop and placed them in 3D space in After Effects. I moved a camera along the X axis and animated a 3D Stroke to circle around them which really helped to sell the 3D look...
