Insurance and theft prevention

Now that I'm investing more money into my equipment. I'm thinking of getting insurance. What insurance do you guys use and how much does it cost?

BTW, does anyone know devices that helps prevent theft? such as one that alerts your smartphone if your equipment is being move.

I have had good success with a German Shepherd for theft protection when making trips from the car to a venue. A side benefit is no one trips over your tripod - you get a nice four foot perimeter which is great for video recording.

I have liability insurance through the Hartford and they were able to combine that with equipment insurance. I had to ask a lot of questions on how that worked, for instance, it's not possible for my equipment to be insured if say I rent it. I'm not in the rental business but I have been asked, as recently as this week, to rent some of my gear.

I know there is insurance for the renter to have but it does not protect me from liability if someone gets hurt while the renter uses it. The underwriter told me that if someone made such a claim against me that they would handle it but drop me which I understand is not something you want to have happen because getting insurance after that would be difficult if not impossible. Seems odd no? I wonder how rental houses manage that, probably a whole other class of insurance or a liability waiver maybe? It is something I mean to research. I'm really interested in protecting my gear from theft or damage while I'm shooting with it but I would appreciate any insight from those who do rent once in a while.
