Instrumental/song from 'Adventureland'

I hope this is within guidelines, or an exception can be made just this once : D. This song is played twice, first after Em drops off James and is driving away from his house, right after Em and James first meet and they're drinking rum in Em's car while James's mom is watching from the house. The second time is right after James tells Em about his date with Lisa P.

It's a slow, eastern-styled electric guitar and drums instrumental. The guitar is sort of psychedelic sounding, like a sitar almost. It's a really interesting song.

The song is in this video from 9:09-9:30, it's really worth checking out:

Listen to the song, if you like it too then help me find out who the musicians are who make this cool music!

According to imdb, it looks like the music department was:

Music Department

Christy Gerhart .... music executive: SKE Bonnie Greenberg .... executive in charge of music: SKE Annette Kudrak .... music editor Lawrence Manchester .... score mixer Tracy McKnight .... music supervisor T. Colby Trane .... music coordinator (as Colby Trane) E. Gedney Webb .... music editor (as Gedney Webb) Eric Paul .... assistant music editor (uncredited)

Does anyone a) know the song, or b) know how I can email any of these people to ask? Is it terribly obtrusive of me to even care that much?

Thanks for any help!

I think it's just a piece composed specifically for that scene. Fits too well. So it prob doesn't have a name, it's more of a filler.

Why do you want to contact them? It's nice and all, but I'm sure someone can compose something similar or along those lines.

Ahhh, the obligatorily indie, single-guitar score.
Here you go. I tabbed it for ya. :)

Standard Tuning

h = hammer on
p = pull off
/ = slide
~ = sustain
(#) = optional/2nd track

Intro + 1st Riff 2nd Riff

e-------------------------------------I-----------------------------
B---(4)------------------------------I-----------------(4)---------
G----0~~~----0h1p0----3---0---I----0h1p0---3/5----------
D-------------------------------------I-----------------------------
A--3~~~~--------------(1)/(3)---I-------------(1)/(3)--------
E--------------(1)-------------------I---(1)-----------------------

This little ditty basically has 3 parts: the Intro, Riff 1 and Riff 2 (both riffs repeat). Use these notes as a base, then improvise, improvise, improvise. "Off" notes are your friend here.

Use the high (bridge) pick-up.
Turn down BASS. Turn up TREBLE. Add TREMOLO + REVERB + a little FUZZ. Play "Twangy" (i.e. flat-pick near bridge). IMO, plucking sounds best.

HTH. If it doesn't, oh well! At least I tried!

It's part of the original score written by Yo La Tengo. Great independent rock band, lots of albums to check out if you're interested - been at it since the 80s. There was an offer to get a copy of the original score when you ordered their latest album, but I think it was a vinyl only promotional thing for record stores mostly. You can still find copies on eBay and the like.

Anyway, hope that helps!

Thanks for your help, everyone.

The poster above me is right, it's definitely Yo La Tengo. I actually emailed the band and asked them... So, thanks for your help! You helped me answer a question which I thought was unanswerable.
