InstantHD

Is there any way to use this with Vegas or would I have to get AE for it to work? I don't think I really need After Effects since I hear 90% of what AE does can be done in Vegas.

No. InstantHD is only for Premiere, AE, & FCP. I question how good it can possibly be. It sounds like snake oil to me. HD is 4.5x the resolution of SD. I have never heard of uprezing 450% without it being noticeable. The real test is to compare InstantHD to what Vegas can do natively (Vegas is very good at uprezing too). My guess is that Vegas will do just as good a job, so save your money until you test it for yourself against Vegas.

After I've had After Effects for a while now, I realize how totally wrong I was about the 90% number.

I had heard that, though.

Vegas and AE are two different programs and Vegas can't do a third of what AE can do.

Right on Harry. Vegas is my favorite NLE. It can't even come close to what AE can do, unless you're only exploring the surface of AE.

It's like saying "photoshop can do almost 90% of what Maya can do.". Yeah PS is amazing for what it is, but don't get silly. It's like comparing a hammer to a saw. They're both awesome tools for what they do.

Uprezzing seems like a bad practice to me. If you want a higher def image, shoot in a higher def format. In audio it would be like resampling 44.1 to 88.2. The same information is still going to be there, only since you messed with it you might get some artifacting outside of your control. Be honest with yourself. Art -it's all about control.

If I'm wrong, someone please PM me the advantages of uprezzing. I'd love to hear some arguments. I just don't see it improving anything that's worth the time being put into the process.
