Instant JPEG from RAW

Some of you that do bulk processing or shoot RAW+JPEG might just hug me (assuming you don't also read Scott Kelby or Michael Tapes blogs).

For those that do not know, when you take a RAW image you camera is also embedding a JPEG thumbnail in the RAW file. This allows your camera to display it on the LCD as well as on your computer. So when you shoot RAW+JPEG you are actually saving the RAW file with the embedded JPEG plus the exact same JPEG but with the proper file extension as a separate file.

This handy little tool, will let you extract the JPEG from the RAW file without having to let LR or Aperture process the image. It's very handy. On my D200, part of the reason the RAW file is so large is that it embeds an identical dimensioned JPEG, so I can extract a full res JPEG from the RAW file. Some cameras down res the thumb nail, but it depends on the camera. The tool will also let you process one file, or a whole folder full of RAW files. It will even down res on extraction if you like to a more Flickr friendly size like 800x800. It also does not hurt the integrity of the JPEG that stays embedded in the RAW file.

It works fantasticly, and the auto extract/down res feature might work wonders for some of us Flickr-holics. One other great thing is that it is not an application per se, it's what they are calling a Utility. Meaning, just right click on the RAW file or folder full of RAW files and click on the "Instant JPEG from RAW" option.

I'd recommend going to Michael's blog here to learn lots of cool stuff. http://www.rawworkflow.com/blog/

I'd also recommend visiting and registering on his site for the software.

Enjoy!

I'm kind of shocked I got no reply to this. Do people just not think this is useful or was it not clear what it does?

Just wondering, b/c I had the same response in another forum. I thought it was very useful. I'm shooting all of my weddings in RAW with B&W preview. Then when I get home I don't have to do any B&W convertions since I already have a B&W JPEG. If the image needs a lot of work then I can always go back to the raw file.

It's nice to know this is available but personally I wouldn't get much use out of it. I always like going through my RAW files to adjust WB and exposure. I don't bother with WB in the camera and I purposely over expose about a .5 a stop so that I can wind up with a cleaner image in the end. I just open all my RAW files up in camera raw at once and do a batch export so it really doesn't take too long this way.

If I shot 500+ photos a day and just need to quick proofs then yes it would be useful. I also tried installing this. It goes through teh setup but after restarting I don't see any start menu programs or anything when I right click (maybe because I'm using 64bit windows)
