Instamic - Pending Release

A posting of Richard Crowley, back in July 2015, led me to the Instamic campaign on Indiegogo. Neat concept, I thought, and after weighing the pros and cons decided to throw some of my money into the ring and see what would result. The campaign was doing well, and had already surpassed its fundraising goal, and ended up being funding 539% over its original target...but in these campaigns there are no guarantees.

The product reached several of its stretch goals, which saw boosts to the internal memory capacity (2GB>4GB>8GB), recording capability (48kHz>96kHz) and with some technological upgrades, streaming audio capability was added, and MEMS technology brought along upgrades to the microphone capabilities; increased frequency response (50 to 18kHz>45 to 20kHz), sensitivity (-26dBFS>-46dBFS), maximum SPL (120dB>133dB), dynamic range, total harmonic distortion, and signal to noise ratio.

There was some controversy, as Michele Baggio decided to add in Apple MFI (Made for iDevice) certification to the initial release of the Instamic, and shipping dates started slipping. Many backers complained that they did not use Apple devices and didn't need the streaming capability, and finally, as of a month+ ago, Michele finally offered to produce a Non-MFI version of the Instamic and ship those devices. But here we are a month + later and the latest update is that the Apple MFI certification has been received, and production of the Instamic will start up with delivery of the recording devices to be completed before year end.

There have been plenty of challenges along the way (you can read about those on the Indiegogo site), but Michele Baggio and his team have surmounted all and I'm looking forward to receiving my two Instamic Pro devices...which are waterproof to 3.2 feet for 30 minues (IP67), and can record in mono, dual mono, and stereo. The regular Instamic is 'splash proof' and cannot record in stereo. The microphones have Bluetooth 4.0 and can be controlled with iPhone and Android applications (yet to be released).

I think these will be useful to have in my audio toolbox collection...and will share my experiences after I get a chance to put them to work.

I'm done with indiegogo and kickstarter.
Too much trouble for nothing.
And got burned twice.
Good luck with your campaign but I have doubts .....

The inability to monitor what you are doing is a major flaw and if you want a bluetooth mic for your smartphone you can already get one from Sony etc.

I also think that a small recorder with a rode or low cost lav mic would give more flexibility and be of more use and for videomaking it looks dreadful in shot!

Good luck to them but I personally think there are better solutions to a perceived problem that simply does not exist.

It may even get the usual law suit as Tascam did with their device.

The marketing hype reminds me of the ring mic light that was being sold for around the same price a few years ago but was basically a cheap camping light from china that you could buy for less than $10 inc delivery.

@ geani66. Yes, until it shows up at the front door, and goes through some testing, doubting is healthy..!

I can't help but be reminded of those little clip on guitar/uke tuners that are the size and shape of this thing and are available everywhere for under $10.

@Jim Feeley, yes they use MEMS microphones in the Instamic (6 in the Pro version). I am not familiar with this technology...will have to do some reading. But the sample recordings on the site, and from some of the beta testers, sounds clear and good to my ears...so I am not expecting any unpleasant surprises...(famous last words?). <grin>

@ GaryNattrass, agreed, always good to find the best solution to a problem...I have a few lapel microphones (including a Rode Lavalier) that I can connect to my Tascam DR10-CS recorder when called for, and a few OSH lapel mics (XLR terminated) that can be connected to my Zoom H6 recorder, or Panasonic camera, but none of that equipment is waterproof...and so I'm hoping that the Instamic will fill a niche where I can get decent audio in poor weather conditions, or in really small places...

Am I missing somethng ? On the site it says the Black Pro version is waterproof. Seems unlikely , weather resistant perhaps... I could see using this under helmets for skiing and motocross etc. But I agree that it is large to snap on a shirt or jacket. I bought a Rode pin mic and though I don't use it often, it has been handy for some wardrobe situations and is quite discreet. I wanted one of the Tascam recorders but didn't move fast enough and the patent law ended that, until I go to Europe again.

Yes, the Pro version is waterproof to a 5 foot depth... Not my intended usage, but I am confident that I could use this in the rain or around water without disaster looming.

I ordered a TASCAM DR10-cs from the UK and have used it on a few projects... Very useful, although I have not used the passthrough capability yet...but nice to have if I need to link to my wireless system.
