Newb here, how do I get this codec to play with premiere cs3? Where do I put the codec in all those premiere folders?

hmmm, okay, so then if I want to import a AVCHD clip in premiere, how do I make it DNxHD so that it will play in premiere?

Oh I see, I think I read another thread wrong, I thought DXnHD was like a AVC transcoder, my mistake. Mpeg Streamclip transcodes you say? How's the quality?

in windows there are three ways for codec to work

The old "video for windows", usually seen only by legacy applications like virtualdub.

The new "DirectX", used by all new sytems

The "Custom" , that is is not directly available to windows, you need a proprietary apps (like quicktime ).

You can see the codecs in control panel (strangely under the sound settings).
There you will only see the codec of the first category and sometimes few of the 2nd category if they got a "door" into the first category.

For example DV codec from Microsoft are from the 2nd category, so not available in virtualdub, but you can install some DV codecs that are working into the first category (like panasonic or mainconcept DV codec).

The first two methods are usually available to premiere (depends particularly if you need to read or write). Most of time for the 2nd category, you have a .ax file , that is a "filter" to advise windows what to use to read/write the media.

The quality is dependent on the codec chosen. I've had stuff I've transcoded with Mpeg Streamclip on the big screen, and some of that work is on the festival circuit right now.

It's excellent.
