Even the best are inspired by the best. Woody Allen admitted it. Martin Scorsese and David Lynch admitted it. Even Wes Anderson admitted to his "Stanley Kubrick shot" in Rushmore [I listen to a lot of commentaries]

My question is, how often do you embody the spirit of your favorite filmmakers in your own work; a particular shot, or technique, or mood.

Who inspires you, and more importantly, why?

Hmmm. That's good question and more difficult to really pin down for myself.

As a child I was drawn to movies by Star Wars (as many will freely admit) but George Lucas is certainly not an influence on any of the work I've done in film.

I'd have to say that Cameron Crowe and Kevin Smith are possibly the influence that one might be able to detect in my work but that's mainly at the script level.

As a director, I don't know that I've really been specifically influenced by one person. Moreso like Tarantino by an accumulated study (whether overtly or passively as a viewer).

for me it's David Lynch. whenever Im having trouble with a particular sequence, whether it be lighting, or composition, or just getting that "certain" mood, I watch his films and the answer is always there.

I hear you on Lynch, I've become a pretty big fan of his recently, everything that I've seen from him has never dissapointed me.

Mine would have to be Wes Anderson, for the type of films/looks i go for, i studied most of my lighting off of, Darjeeling Limited/Chevalier, and The Life Aquatic. I have very bright sets..

But then again, my "Fav" directors change, as my current projects change..

Today its Wes type films, tomorrow its Paul Thomas Anderson.. it Varies..

I tend to try keeping my shot flow complex and interesting while looking as smooth and simple as Woody Allen or Spielberg's work.

Catch Me If You Can, Se7en, Lawrence of Arabia, Goodfellas, and Vertigo are all pretty steady influences on my style.
