Inserting events on the tiimeline

How do you insert or lengthen an event on the timeline while simultaneously not affecting anything forward of the event?

In the past I've cut and pasted and tried grouping all the other items forward of them but there has to be an easier way.

Now I've got an event nearly at the beginning of my doc that I need to stretch by 5 or 6 seconds without affecting the million other cuts in the 20 minutes after that.

What I do is I insert an empty event on the left-most spot on the top track (after your newly lengthened clip) and an empty event on th right-most spot on the bottom track. Click one empty event. Hold shift key. Click other empty event. Move. Hope this helps some?
 
What do mean by "not affect" the rest of the sequence?

Do you mean, you want to make room for the clip by moving everything all at once?

Use ripple edits.
 
A ripple edit will do that for you -- move everything to the right a clip when you make a change. There's a button on the toolbar to enable it -- but make sure you have it set to apply it to everything and not just the single track.
