The typography animation at 0:24, 0:33 and 0:56 is awesome. Not after effects but....there is a lot of nice work in this trailer.

I've been trying to recreate a similar text effect in AE but have not gotten very good results.

Any ideas how you'd approach it?

I remember that ayaoweb.com had a tutorial with text animation using mask paths from illustrator and a lot of the add functions in the text menu...wondering if that is a way...

Anyhoo...curious about your ideas.
 
There are similar 3D-ish text presets that ship with AE, but this particular treatment was done in a dedicated 3D package. Not hard to do really, just have to know 3D.
 
That isnt too hard to do in AE. Just create text and apply Shape Extruder which will make it appear as 3d text.....then move it around in 3d space.
 
Thats easy in a 3D program. Just start the animation with the text in the correct position and then animate it spinning and breaking up and then reverse the movie clip when you are done to make it look like its coming together.
