Input sought for software

Hope this is the correct forum for my questions...

I'm in the market for some decent sound editing software and am leaning towards Audition. All I'm using now is what came with my copy of Premiere which is limited. My son uses Audition and likes it but I would like to hear (read) from you about your thoughts.

This came about because I received a taped interview that sounded like they shot it in a hotel lobby next to a waterfall with a digital consumer camera. The talking head is barely audible and I'm in a time crunch, naturally. My son is going to try his best to reduce the background noise but I'm eventually going to need the software for other projects.

Thanks in advance for all your input(s)...

Pro Tools is the de facto standard. Nuendo is also very nice. I've never used Audition, but I've hard good things about it. I just recently used Audacity (FREE! YAY) to do some very basic editing, and it was o.k.

I own pro tools, and I like it the best. I do freelance sound design work, and I demo'ed Nuendo before I bought pro tools, and whereas it's pretty cool, it didn't feel as intuitive as pro tools, and I alredy knew pro tools, and I didn't have time to learn a new DAW.

Go down to your local pro audio dealer and see if they have some systems set up that you can check out.

You might also look at Sound Forge with Noise Reduction. Not sure of your budget but this package is used by audio/video professionals.

Steinberg wave Lab isn't to shabby either, and the Waves restoration pack which will work with Soundforge and Wave lab has some good noise reducers. Not as good as Audition's for some reason.

Didn't Adobe buy Cool edit to turn into Audition?

I have Pro Tools and Nuendo. They are both great. But Audition is based on Cool Edit Pro which many people liked a lot, so I don't think you'll go wrong using it. The biggest challenge you might be faced with is knowing how to use it to your full advantage, but if you have experience with sound that shouldn't be a problem.
