Ingesting MFX into Vegas

I edit with Vegas Pro 9 and I understand that I am unable to drag the MFX files produced by my new HPX 170 onto the Vegas timeline without Raylight Ultra.
Major PITA that I'm sure every one knows about.
A new version of Raylight is not yet ready for Vegas 9 and it's not likely I will be learning another NLE any time soon,
So, can I ingest into Vegas 8, create an .avi and move it to Vegas 9 where the other footage for this project is?
I never thought going tapeless would be so difficult and confusing.
In simple terms what workflow, ---camera to Vegas,--- do you find most efficient?
Keep in mind I have one 16 GB P2 card for now and for this project would be shooting in 480i, wich I understand to be SD, right?

Hello Peabody,

Raylight Ultra is almost ready for Vegas 9. The plugin works but there are some bugs being hashed out right now. You can follow this at the website www.dvfilm.com or on twitter www.twitter.com/dvfilm.

In the meantime, you can still use Raylight Ultra with Vegas 8.0 and drag your mxf's directly in.

For editing MXF files in Vegas, Raylight is the most efficient workflow because you can drag directly in, edit in real-time, have 2 or 4 audio tracks, and use a metadata slate plus additional features.

480i is SD (standard definition).

Best Regards,
Andy

However, don't blame the tapeless workflow . . . it's great; in an NLE which can truly take advantage of it (the best are Premiere Pro CS4 and Edius Broadcast), the benefits are enormous.

Hi there - I am new here.

I am working with an HPX171, VegasPro9 and RaylightUltra.
So far everything works fine. The only problem I have is ingesting footage into Vegas:
With the Raylight plugin I can drag the mxf-files directly to the timeline. But I have to do this with every mxf-file on the P2 card - that means I have to scroll through the folders for EVERY file. Is there a simple workflow that allows me to ingest all MXF-files of a P2 Card with one mouse click? Like in FinalCutPro the log&transfer option.

Thanks for all answers!

Tons of ways.

Easiest is to open the Video folder (in Windows Explorer), select them all, and drag them to the Project Media panel.

Or, File>Import>Media, navigate to the Video folder, and select all of them.

OMG!

Sorry for that. I now realize that I've never tried to copy the files directly from the P2 card to my computer. Now I did and everything works perfect. Up to now I've always used P2CMS to ingest the footage. Seems that this weird program generates a new folder for every mxf-file. Then of course it's quite annoying to work with them in Vegas...

Thanks for your answer and sorry again.

BTW does anyone have a solution for working with the P2CMS folder structure in Vegas? :)

You'll find P2 Viewer is much more useful for that kind of thing -- you create virtual P2 cards on your hard drive and then you can transfer however many clips you want into them THROUGH P2 Viewer -- from P2 cards, from other virtual cards, etc. Plus, it'll stitch spanned clips.

Thanks David!

P2 viewer works fine. And P2CMS also gives the possibility to export virtual P2 cards - that's at least a workaround for using the already ingested files.

Greetings,
Rainer
