Informative Lighting Write up

Hey guys,

I've started a Lighting blog on this subject. Basically I'd like to break down shots to popular films and try and achieve the same setup. I'd love to get your feedback! Not sure that I'm nailing the lighting setups just yet, but its great fun and very educational! Thanks for looking!

I had some time on my hands, so i put this video together. I hope it shows/explains enough.

Here's a short test on how some of the lights i have laying around the studio work. I have an Arri 650 watt, Lowel Pro 250 watt, Lowel Omni 500 watt, and Cool Lights 600 watt LED. My goal was the test out different soft lighting scenarios. First, I used the Arri and bounced the light off of a 2'x2' piece of foam core. I liked this set up the best, very soft shadows. I shot the Arri through a Westcott difusion disk in two ways. First was the disk about 3' from the face and the Arri was at eye level. The next was the disk about a foot closer to the face and I raised the light up, so that shone down at a 45 degree angle to the face. This was also nice. I also ran the Lowel Omni through the diffusion disk, which was okay, but the light doesn't have great focus control, so lots of light spilled onto the background. No bueno.
Other set ups included a 250 watt Lowel Pro and a 500 watt Lowel Omni shot through an extra small Chimera softbox. Harsh shadows, no bueno.
The last set up was a 600 watt Cool Lights LED with a full CTO filter through a soft box. The light is nice and soft, but the white balance doesn't match the other halogen lights as you can tell by the background color shift in this shot.
